My Take: Nirbhaya's case deserved death penalty under existing statutes

Jyoti or Nirbhaya's parents have got a feeling of justice today. However, will the death penalty deter other rapists? Evidence suggests otherwise.

Tough laws are essential to send out a firm message to those who may have otherwise felt emboldened.

Yes, Nirbhaya's case fitted in the rarest of rare category and deserved death under existing statutes. What is the key though is swiftness and certainty of punishment.

There have been other less high profile cases that have lingered for years. Only when all rape cases are fast tracked will we have taken a step forward to honour Nirbhaya's memory.

Video: Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM amid loud cheers and chants

TVK leader C Joseph Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu amid a sea of supporters, his friends and family, and several political leaders. Eight other TVK leaders were sworn in besides him, as ministers in the new government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attended the ceremony.
