Protests erupt in Murshidabad as Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury arrives; Robert Vadra eyes Lok Sabha seat

Clashes broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district during a Ram Navami procession on Wednesday, leaving several people injured. The incident happened in the Shaktipur area when a group was leading a procession during the Hindu festival.

Berhampore MP and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury visited the region on Wednesday evening. "I came to see the people who were injured in the clash from Malda. But BJP workers staged a protest in the hospital claiming that Hindus are under attack and demanding an answer from me. Those protesting should ask those who need to answer," he said.

Meanwhile, businessman Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, said on Tuesday that it is not necessary that he contest from Amethi if he enters active politics, and he can contest from either Moradabad or Haryana too.

"People from Amethi, Moradabad and even Haryana are requesting me to come into active politics and choose their constituency," Vadra told news agency ANI. There are 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana and the other two constituencies are in Uttar Pradesh.

Video: PM Modi hugs, touches feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
