A year of war in West Asia: Israel marks 1st anniversary of Hamas attack

Israel marked the first anniversary of the devastating Hamas attack on Monday. At the site of the musical festival where more than 360 people were killed and dozens taken hostage, Israeli President Isaac Herzog presided over the ceremony. It began with the last track that was played at the party a year ago.

Israel had memorial ceremonies at Kibbutz villages and towns near the border throughout the day and in Jerusalem. The Israeli Prime Minister visited a memorial monument in Jerusalem commemorating the victims and fallen soldiers from Hamas's October 7 attack. Families of hostages still held in Gaza, about 100 or so, a third of whom are said to be dead, gathered outside Benjamin Netanyahu's Jerusalem residence demanding the release of their loved ones.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
