Virat Kohli scores sensational hundred, but South Africa take lead

Virat Kohli smashed his ninth 150-plus score as he struck a sensational century on the third day of the second Test against South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Monday.

Kohli paced his innings to perfection to notch up his 21st Test century as he scored 153. Kohli fought a lone battle and was the last Indian batsman to be dismissed as the visitors folded for 307, handing South Africa (335) a crucial 28-run first innings lead.

Kohli compiled his innings superbly, choosing his scoring shots well, and became just the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to score two Test centuries on South African soil. Kohli also became the second Asian captain after Tendulkar to score a hundred in South Africa.

He now has 21 Test tons to go with 15 half-centuries, a conversion rate that is only bettered in the game by Don Bradman, who made 29 hundreds and 13 fifties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
