The directive has generated a significant national debate, with animal rights activists and dog lovers protesting the move, while many residents and officials support it, citing increasing dog menace and a surge in dog bite cases. The controversy raises questions about the feasibility of sheltering an estimated 10 lakh dogs. Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, has assured a review of the plea against the order. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP.
