Brutal heatwave batters India as northern plains brace for 49°C. Here's when

North, East, and Central India are bracing for peak heatwave conditions with temperatures hitting 49 degrees Celsius until May 28. A Western Disturbance is expected to bring rain relief only toward the month end.

The northern plains of India have transformed into a surreal, shimmering crucible. Stepping outdoors feels less like walking into summer and more like walking directly into the path of an open blast furnace.

North, East, and Central India are currently trapped in a punishing weather matrix as a severe heatwave tightens its grip, with temperatures expected to scale astronomical highs between 45 and 49 degrees Celsius until May 28.

According to independent weather expert Navdeep Dahiya, the intense thermal onslaught offers absolutely no immediate escape.

CAN DELHI EXPECT RESPITE FROM THE HEAT?

While a sudden, mild duststorm and passing thundershowers brought a brief respite to Delhi-NCR between 8:15 am and 10:00 am on Saturday, May 23, the relief was purely transient.

The mercury still clocked a searing 41 degrees Celsius to 43 degrees Celsius later that afternoon.

The underlying culprit behind this prolonged torture is a lack of active atmospheric cooling mechanisms, coupled with the classic pre-monsoon thermal build-up.

Ground observations and India Meteorological Department Global Forecast System models indicate that the core heat zone is widening.

Between Monday, May 25, and May 30, a second, more severe wave will push maximum temperatures to an unbearable 45 degrees Celsius to 49 degrees Celsius across the northern and central plains.

The hottest zones will encompass west Rajasthan, Southwest Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, where the mercury will consistently hover between 45 degrees Celsius and 48 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha will experience a relentless 43 to 46 degrees Celsius stretch until Thursday.

Simultaneously, cities are battling the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon where concrete, glass, and asphalt structures trap solar radiation during the day and release it slowly at night, keeping nocturnal temperatures dangerously high.

Relief is only expected around the month end, when a decent Western Disturbance, an extra-tropical storm originating in the Mediterranean region, is predicted to trigger widespread thunderstorms. Until then, extreme hydration remains vital.
