Ben Stokes has firmly dismissed speculation of a rift with head coach Brendon McCullum, calling such claims a “massive overstatement” in the aftermath of England’s disappointing Ashes campaign. The rumours gathered pace following England’s heavy 4-1 defeat in Australia earlier this year.

Reports had suggested that Stokes and McCullum held differing views during the post-series review, with both allegedly critical of each other’s approach. However, Stokes has now publicly shut down those narratives, insisting their working relationship remains strong and aligned.

‘YOU NEED DEBATE, DISCUSSIONS’

Stokes emphasised that disagreements with McCullum are healthy, stressing that honest discussions, not blind agreement, drive success. Stokes added that while their approaches may differ at times, both share the same goal and ultimately reach common ground through constructive debate.

"To me, that just isn't a healthy environment for sport, in particular, where everyone just agrees with everyone or says yes to the person up there. You need debate. You need not arguments, but you need discussions. Then you end up getting to the place you both want to end up getting to,” Stokes told the ECB's website.

"As similar as me and Brendon are, we're also dissimilar in other areas as well. But the thing we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can. How we get to being successful might be the same here, but slightly differs here - but we will always be able to end up in the same place by having these discussions,” Stokes said.

‘AGREEING ON EVERYTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE’

Stokes, who has been working with McCullum since 2022, said they agree on most matters, resolve differences through discussion, and insisted suggestions of any lack of alignment have been greatly exaggerated.

"We agree 95 per cent of the time on things, but those 5 per cent things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other and then we end up getting to the place where we both feel that we want to get to. Agreeing on every single thing, that's just impossible. Saying that we weren't aligned, I think is a massive overstatement,” Stokes added.

England are set to kick off their Test summer with a three-match series against New Zealand starting June 4. They currently sit seventh in the World Test Championship standings, with three wins and six losses from 10 matches.
