CSK's Ayush Mhatre ruled out of IPL 2026 due to hamstring injury
IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings suffer a major setback as Ayush Mhatre is ruled out of IPL 2026 with injury. The youngster's absence leaves CSK searching for answers in an already struggling campaign.

Chennai Super Kings have been hit with a significant setback in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as their in-form youngster Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of the season with a left hamstring tear. The timing could not have been worse for CSK, who were beginning to lean heavily on the 18-year-old for stability at the top.
Mhatre’s emergence has been one of the few positives in an otherwise inconsistent campaign. At a time when the batting unit struggled to find rhythm, his fearless intent in the powerplay brought much-needed momentum and clarity to CSK’s approach.
SRH vs CSK, IPL 2026: Highlights | Scorecard
"Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush's injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks," CSK said in their statement.
The impact is evident in the numbers. Mhatre has scored 201 runs this season at a strike rate of 177.87, making him the side’s most effective batter so far. More than the runs, it was the tempo he set that started shaping CSK’s batting blueprint.
Losing him now leaves a sizeable void, both in output and intent. With the squad already stretched by injuries, including the absence of Khaleel Ahmed, CSK’s campaign is beginning to look increasingly fragile.
The challenge is further amplified by their position on the table. With just two wins from six matches, CSK sit eighth, and with tough fixtures against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians coming up, replacing Mhatre’s impact becomes an immediate and pressing concern.
HOW DID AYUSH MHATRE GET INJURED?
Mhatre’s injury occurred during CSK’s chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he walked in early and looked in excellent touch. He raced to 30 in just 12 balls, putting pressure back on the bowlers.
However, while completing a second run, he suddenly pulled up and clutched his hamstring, clearly in discomfort. The physio rushed onto the field, and Mhatre required on-field treatment.
Despite struggling to move freely, he continued batting, limping between the wickets. The situation became more concerning when he attempted quick singles, risking a run-out due to his limited mobility.
The handling of his injury has also come under scrutiny. Former India and CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was among those who criticised the decision to let Mhatre continue batting despite being in visible discomfort, suggesting that it may have worsened the situation.
His innings eventually ended when he mistimed an attacking shot and was caught in the infield. While the dismissal ended a promising knock, the bigger setback was the injury, which has now ruled him out of the tournament.
