Hello and welcome to our coverage of Match 5 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, where the Lucknow Super Giants take on the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, April 1.

23:29 IST:
Over and out - We wrap things up after a nail-biting low-scoring thriller, where Delhi Capitals got the better of Lucknow Super Giants to close out the opening round of IPL 2026. The tournament rolls on with a high-octane clash next, as Sunrisers Hyderabad face Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, April 2. The first ball will be bowled at 2 pm GMT (7.30 pm IST), with build-up coverage coming your way well in advance. Until next time, goodbye!
23:29 IST:
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Sameer Rizvi wins the award for his match-winning 70* off 47. Rizvi says the management has backed him to bat at number 4 and express himself, and he looked to do exactly that tonight.
23:26 IST:
The victorious skipper of Delhi Capitals - Axar Patel jokingly says that the match got finished early. He admits that it got a bit close in the middle, but they knew they just needed one partnership to seal the game.

23:25 IST:
Let's hear from Tristan Stubbs - Stubbs says he wasn’t even fully padded up when he had to walk in, but it was pretty clear what the job was, which was to spend time at the crease and bat sensibly. He praises Sameer Rizvi’s innings, calling it magnificent, and notes that the wicket had a bit in it early on with some swing and nip. Tristan highlights that Rizvi takes on spin naturally, which made things easier for him, and all he had to do was just rotate the strike. Mentions that they knew one good over could change the equation, and once that came, it became a run-a-ball chase. Stubbs tells that there wasn’t a specific plan to take on Shahbaz Ahamad, but the talk between him and Rizvi was about assessing whether the ball was spinning. Adds that the first 3 balls went for 12, and it all worked out for them. On his role, Tristan says he enjoys batting at number 6, adding that the situation usually dictates what needs to be done, and he can take the team over the line.
23:20 IST:
The captain of the Lucknow Super Giants - When asked about his run out, Rishabh Pant replies that the best way to deal with it is to forget about it, adding that it’s something you can’t control and dwelling on it only puts you on the back foot. Pant explains that given the way they batted, they need a player who can contribute with both bat and ball, which is why Shahbaz Ahmed came in as the impact sub. He adds that the role for Ayush Badoni is clearly defined, especially when they lose early wickets, with Badoni expected to step in and stabilise. Rishabh shares that the way the team fought with the ball was one of the positives of the game. Admits that extras hurt, especially when defending a low total, as there is a tendency to try a bit too much. When asked why they moved away from the Marsh-Markram opening pair, he shares that they wanted to explore the left-right combination up top. He further says it is a 50-50 call whether he continues to open, but indicates that he will remain in the top order.
23:11 IST:
Strong start goes in vain - Lucknow can take plenty of positives from their bowling effort, especially the way they came out firing in the Powerplay. Mohammad Shami struck off the very first ball, while Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav chipped in as well to reduce DC to 26/4 and put them firmly on the back foot. However, they couldn’t build on that early momentum and failed to create enough opportunities as the innings progressed. In their eagerness to push harder, they ended up conceding too many extras, 20 in total, including 16 wides, which proved costly in a low-scoring game. Anrich Nortje couldn’t quite make the impact they were hoping for and was expensive, while the two overs from the spinners went for 29 runs, allowing the momentum to shift decisively in favour of the Capitals.
23:06 IST:
Batting woes sink LSG - Earlier in the game, LSG posted what looked like a below-par total, never quite managing to stitch together any meaningful partnerships. The top order failed to make an impact, with only Marsh’s 35 offering some resistance, while Abdul Samad chipped in with a valuable 36 to push them past the 140 mark. Beyond that, it was a disappointing outing with the bat, lacking both momentum and stability. For DC, Ngidi was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive three-fer, while Natarajan was equally effective, finishing with figures of 3/29. Kuldeep and Axar complemented the effort well, sharing three wickets between them to keep LSG firmly in check.
23:12 IST:
Capitals recover to clinch it - Delhi Capitals were rocked early, losing Rahul for a golden duck off the very first ball, and things only got worse as they found themselves reeling at 33/4 at the end of the Powerplay. In a spot of real trouble, they turned to Sameer Rizvi as the Impact Sub, and he made the biggest difference in the game. With the chase needing stability, Rizvi, alongside Stubbs, stitched together a crucial partnership, blending caution with calculated aggression. With the pressure of a low target not weighing too heavily, the pair rotated the strike smartly, punished the loose deliveries, and never allowed LSG to claw their way back. The duo added 119 runs off 81 balls, with Rizvi bringing up a fantastic half-century, staying unbeaten on 70 off just 47 as Delhi eventually chased it down with 17 balls to spare.
23:03 IST:
Calm heads see DC through - Delhi Capitals kick off their campaign with a hard-fought win, making it five wins in a row against LSG. At the halfway stage, it looked like it would be a comfortable chase, but Delhi were made to work hard after early setbacks. Sameer Rizvi was at the heart of the victory, while Stubbs' calm presence proved crucial in guiding them over the line. Credit to Lucknow Super Giants for making their opponents earn every run, but in the end, they just didn’t have enough on the board.
23:01 IST:
17.1: Abdul Samad to Sameer Rizvi, SIX! Fittingly, Sameer Rizvi hits the winning runs. A coming-of-age innings from the young Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs is delighted at the other end as the two share a hug. DC hunt down 142 with 6 wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare. Abdul Samad drops it short, on middle. Sameer has all the time in the world to rock back, and he pulls it with disdain over deep mid-wicket for a six to finish the game off.

LSG vs DC Live: Sameer Rizvi seals the win in style

What a composed chase from DC, and what a statement knock from Sameer Rizvi. Walking in under pressure, he absorbed the early squeeze, trusted his game, and then shifted gears at just the right time.

The finish with a six was fitting for an innings built on temperament and awareness. LSG had their moments with the ball, but lapses in discipline and fielding hurt them.

In the end, DC showed greater clarity in execution, holding their nerve when it mattered most and closing out the game with authority.

Well said. Sameer Rizvi has played a gem here under pressure. Came in when DC were in trouble, took his time early on, and then shifted gears brilliantly once set.

That’s a knock full of maturity and composure.

IPL Live: Shami hitting new feats

That’s a remarkable stat doing the rounds. Mohammed Shami has built quite the reputation for striking right at the start of an innings.

Five times now he’s taken a wicket on the very first ball in the IPL, including dismissing KL Rahul twice. It’s not just skill, but that ability to be switched on from ball one that sets him apart.

Big-game bowler, and he keeps proving it with moments like these.

Strategic Break! Talk about making an impact as an Impact Sub, and Sameer Rizvi is doing just that. He will want to see this through himself and not leave it to those waiting in the dugout. DC will be breathing easier thanks to this partnership. LSG have really felt the absence of a penetrative 5th bowling option, but they will still believe. A wicket immediately after the break, and another in quick succession, could just open things up. Anrich Nortje returns to the attack.

IPL Live: Sameer Rizvi take a bow

This is turning into a proper counterattack from Sameer Rizvi. He’s brought up a fine fifty here, and it’s been a knock full of character. Came in as an impact sub with the team under pressure, struggled early, but has paced this beautifully and is now accelerating with confidence.

Aiden Markram is feeling the heat as the fifth bowler, with Rizvi taking him on. That six over wide long-on was clean as it gets, followed by a cracking cut shot to reach his fifty. Once he found his rhythm, there’s been no stopping him.

The partnership is building nicely with Tristan Stubbs playing his role, rotating strike and keeping things ticking.

There’s also a tactical twist now with the ball change coming into play after 10 overs. Rishabh Pant having a quick word with Markram suggests LSG are looking for a way to break this stand, because right now, DC are clawing their way right back into this contest.

22:43 IST:
13.5: Aiden Markram to Sameer Rizvi, FOUR! FIFTY FOR RIZVI! A fantastic knock from the youngster, filled with class, and he has repaid the faith shown in him by DC. Aiden Markram drags his length back and just outside off. Sameer Rizvi uses the width on offer and cuts it past point for a boundary.

A sharp observation from Aakash Chopra. The last-minute switch to bring in Tristan Stubbs meant Hemang Badani had to make that extra run out before the batter walked in.

It might seem like a small detail, but in a pressure situation, even these little disruptions can affect flow and readiness. Smart pick-up.

That’s the end of Mohammed Shami’s spell, and this is where things get interesting for LSG. They now have to juggle their bowling resources smartly.

Four overs still need to come from spin, which puts the spotlight on how they manage this phase. Do they trust their slower options to hold things together, or lean into pace and try to force the issue?

This next stretch could well decide how this game tilts.

DC vs LSG Live: Sloppy from Lucknow

That’s sloppy from LSG, and it’s starting to add up. They’ve already conceded over a dozen extras, and moments like this in the field only pile on the pressure.

It’s the kind of lapse that can come back to haunt you in a tight game. Just a bit more awareness and sharpness in the field would go a long way for the hosts right now.

Lucknow Super Giants are yet to unleash Anrich Nortje in this game. It will not get any easier for DC here.

IPL 2026 Live: Mohsin Khan caps off fine powerplay for LSG

There’s a real heaviness to the ball when Mohsin Khan hits the deck, and it’s making life difficult out there. Both Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi are finding it tough to free their arms, unable to get any fluency into their strokeplay.

This is exactly the kind of squeeze LSG would have wanted at this stage. They’ve slowed things down and built pressure nicely.

The next phase will be crucial though. How LSG manage their spin options could define this passage, and someone like Aiden Markram could well chip in with a useful over to keep the control intact.

LSG vs DC Live: WHAT IS HAPPENING?

This is turning into absolute chaos from LSG, and Prince Yadav is right at the centre of it. One ball he sprays it wide, the next he strikes, and it’s been that kind of over on repeat.

He’s now removed Sameer Rizvi and Axar Patel, swinging momentum firmly in LSG’s favour. Unpredictable, but undeniably effective.

There’s also a bit of needle creeping in, with things getting heated between Prince Yadav and Tristan Stubbs. The Dilli vs UP derby is well and truly spicing up now.

That’s the breakthrough LSG were desperately hunting for. Nitish Rana will be disappointed with that, a loose stroke that finds the slips, where Abdul Samad makes no mistake with a sharp catch.

What adds another layer to this is the tactical call that follows. DC bring in Sameer Rizvi as the impact substitute, opting against Ashutosh Sharma.

It’s an interesting move, especially with someone like Axar Patel available, who could have helped stabilise things in this situation. Instead, DC seem to be backing intent over consolidation here.

... THE RUN CHASE ...
21:22 IST:
LSG have it all to do - To add to the woes of the Super Giants, they used their impact sub in the form of Shahbaz Ahamad, so they no longer have the option of using Avesh Khan or Digvesh Singh with the ball. Early wickets in the powerplay will be crucial if they are to make a contest of this. As for the Capitals, it was a collective effort from the bowling group, and they have set it up for the batters to get the team on the board. Stay tuned for the chase.
21:27 IST:
A quick word with the Proteas speedster - On being asked about Pooran's wicket, Lungi Ngidi says that he was trying to use the longer side. Adds that everyone knows what kind of a ball-striker Pooran is, so he did not want to give pace and do him in the air. Shares that it dipped late and worked out well for him. Ngidi reckons that the last wicket was the best one, as executing a slower wide yorker has been one of the hardest he has learned. Mentions that during the T20 World Cup, Dwayne Bravo told him to get a deceptive slower one, and was also ready to teach him. Ngidi says that what we are seeing has taken a lot of practice, and he is still not 100 per cent, but is trying to emulate as much as he can. He reckons that he bowled two bad balls to Marsh, and on this level, any batter would have put them away. Ends by saying that whenever he landed it right, it was either a dot or a one, and he was constantly chatting to KL Rahul as well.
21:18 IST:
Control through the middle - Through the middle overs, Axar rang the changes smartly, and his bowlers responded impressively. There were a couple of fighting contributions from Mitchell Marsh and later Abdul Samad. When Samad was at the crease, LSG had hopes of pushing towards the 160 mark, but once he was dismissed, the innings fell away quickly, with the last 3 wickets tumbling for just 3 runs.
21:18 IST:
Axar and Mukesh set it up - While Lungi Ngidi didn't have the best of starts, Mukesh Kumar held one end up superbly, with Axar Patel also striking early to put LSG under pressure. The decision to move away from the Markram-Marsh opening combination, with Rishabh Pant partnering Marsh, didn’t quite pay off for LSG.
21:12 IST:
LSG have been rolled over for 141 - A clinical effort from the Delhi Capitals. It was an innings that never really took off for the home side, with wickets falling at regular intervals and no meaningful partnerships developing. After winning the toss, the Capitals did most things right, and their bowlers backed it up with a disciplined and incisive performance to keep LSG in check throughout.
21:09 IST:
18.4: Lungi Ngidi to Mohsin Khan, OUT! CAUGHT! Lungi Ngidi wraps things up here. Shahbaz Ahamad remains stranded at the other end and will be questioning himself for taking that single. Lucknow Super Giants have been bolwed out for 141 in 18.4 overs. That's disappointing as they left six balls in the innings.

LSG vs DC Live: Can Lucknow go past 160?

It's not a happy camp in Lucknow. Justin Langer, the head coach, walked out to talk to the two youngsters during the timeout.

Lucknow need a partnership. If they get past 160, they have a total to fight for on this pitch.

Can Shahbaz and Samad get the job done?

Kuldeep is bowling his final over here.

20:51 IST:
15.1: Kuldeep Yadav to Shahbaz Ahamad, Tossed up, full and around off, Shahbaz Ahamad lofts it but with no real timing towards long on for a single.
20:51 IST:
Strategic Break! Lucknow Super Giants are in a difficult spot here, but Abdul Samad has batted well so far. This is the last recognised batting pair for them, and at least one of them needs to stay till the end to post a competitive score on the board. Delhi Capitals have been excellent with the ball, especially the spinners, who have controlled the middle overs. However, they would now want to break this stand quickly to wrap things up here. Also, Kuldeep Yadav to bowl after the break.

LSG vs DC live: Impact Sub in for Lucknow, panic in the camp

Lucknow Super Giants have brought in Shahbaz Ahmed as their Impact Sub. They lost 6 wickets in the 14th over.

Now, they have sacrificed the option of Digvesh Rathi to bring in Ahmed.

Kuldeep Yadav has enforced this change by picking up the wicket of Mukul Chowdhary with another googly. The partnership between Mukul and Abdul Samad was starting to build, but the wicket has pegged LSG back.

Digvesh was bowling his heart out in the nets on Tuesday. He did not even waste the pre-match warm-up time. But, he won't bowl in Lucknow today.

LSG vs DC Live: Can young Indians stitch a stand?

Mukul Chowdhary and Abdul Samad have looked good. They have taken 12 runs from Vipraj Nigam's first over. The young leggie bowled a couple of freebies, bowling short. That's something Delhi Capitals haven't done.

LSG don't have batting beyond this pair as they have four bowlers after this.

LSG vs DC live: Abdul Samad is the new man in

Abdul Samad is the new man in. Can he join Mitchell Marsh and stitch a partnership for Lucknow Super Giants.

The young man has come into this season of IPL after scoring truckloads of runs in J&K's Ranji Trophy campaign.

LSG need a partnership.

The pitch is turning for the spinners. THe slower ones are working well for the pacers.

20:24 IST:
STRATEGIC BREAK! The move to bring back Lungi Ngidi has worked like a charm for Axar Patel and DC. The Capitals have been rewarded for the discipline they have shown so far, and will be keen to maintain that control. Mitchell Marsh has watched partners come and go and will be hoping for some support from Abdul Samad, who has joined him at the crease. The LSG head coach, Justin Langer, is having an animated conversation with Samad out in the middle. LSG do have the option of bringing in a batter as the impact sub if it comes down to that, but it would mean sacrificing either Avesh Khan or Digvesh Singh.

He tries to play it in front of his body, but his bat hits his pads, and that split second is enough for the ball to go through his defence to rattle the stumps behind. Mukesh sticks out his right hand on his follow-through, and the ball deflects behind onto the stumps with Pant backing up. The third umpire is called into action. First, the contact is confirmed with the replays showing that the ball clipped the pinky finger of the right hand and the side-on angle confirms that Rishabh was out of his crease despite his effort to plonk his back leg in.

Meanwhile, the outfield is lightning in Lucknow. The ball is racing to the boundary once it clears the infield.
