Farewell on IPL return? MS Dhoni trains before CSK vs SRH, sparks buzz

MS Dhoni is once again at the centre of massive anticipation as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare for their final home fixture of IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with growing speculation over whether the franchise legend will finally take the field this season.

On Sunday, a day prior to the clash against the Hyderabad, Dhoni was seen training hard in the nets. The session has once again raised hopes among fans of seeing him at Chepauk, which could potentially be his last appearance in front of his home crowd in his legendary IPL career. If Dhoni plays, it goes without saying that Chepauk will go absolutely berserk.

Dhoni has not played any matches in IPL 2026 so far due to a persistent calf injury sustained during pre-season training, which has kept him out of all CSK matches this year. The injury has significantly limited his involvement in matchday squads, although he has remained closely connected with the team setup throughout the campaign.

Despite his absence from competitive action, Dhoni has been training with the CSK squad, taking part in controlled net sessions and fitness work. However, he has not travelled with the team for most away fixtures and has not been present at stadiums during matches, a pattern that has fuelled further speculation about his availability and long-term future in the IPL.

The upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad carries added emotional weight as it is CSK’s final home match of the season at the venue where Dhoni has built an iconic legacy over nearly two decades. Chepauk has long been regarded as his fortress, and the possibility of him returning, even briefly, has created a wave of excitement among fans.
