Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could not hold back his emotions after Rajasthan Royals' IPL 2026 campaign came to an end with a heartbreaking defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday. The 15-year-old was seen in tears in the RR dugout as the reality of the loss sank in after what had otherwise been another remarkable individual performance.

The youngster, who has been the face of Rajasthan's campaign this season, sat silently in the dugout at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur after Gujarat completed a seven-wicket win to book their place in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Television cameras later captured several Rajasthan Royals teammates trying to console the teenager. Ravindra Jadeja was among those who walked up to Sooryavanshi, while members of the support staff, including team manager Romi Bhinder, were also seen comforting him. At one point, Sooryavanshi appeared to shield himself from the cameras with a towel as he fought back tears.

The emotional scenes came shortly after the youngster had once again delivered for Rajasthan Royals in a knockout game.

Sooryavanshi produced a superb 96 off 47 deliveries, an innings that helped RR post a challenging total of 215. The left-hander once again showcased the fearless batting that has defined his season, recovering from a relatively quiet start against Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada before taking control of the contest.

For a brief period, it looked like he would complete another century. Instead, he suffered the frustration of falling in the nineties for the third time in his last four IPL innings.

Unfortunately for Rajasthan Royals, even 215 proved insufficient.

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan produced one of the finest opening partnerships of the season, putting together 167 runs in just 77 balls to take the game away from RR. While Sudharsan played the aggressor for large parts of the stand, Gill anchored the chase brilliantly before bringing up a stunning century off just 47 deliveries.

The Gujarat captain remained in complete control as the Titans chased down the target with seven wickets in hand, ending Rajasthan Royals' hopes of reaching a second successive IPL final.

HOW VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI'S IPL 2026 ENDED

While the defeat ended Rajasthan Royals' title challenge, it did little to diminish what has been one of the greatest breakthrough seasons in IPL history.

Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 with 776 runs from 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a staggering strike rate of 237.31. He ended the season wearing the Orange Cap and established himself as the biggest story of the tournament.

The numbers only tell part of the story.

Across the season, the teenager rewrote several IPL and T20 records while taking apart some of the world's best bowlers. He smashed centuries against elite attacks, dominated established international stars and repeatedly produced match-winning performances despite being only 15 years old.

Among the records Sooryavanshi broke during IPL 2026 were:

  • Fastest batter to 1,000 IPL runs by balls faced (440 deliveries)
  • Second-fastest batter to 1,000 IPL runs by innings (23 innings)
  • First batter in T20 history to score 500 powerplay runs in a single tournament
  • Most powerplay runs in a T20 tournament, surpassing David Warner's previous record
  • One of the highest run-scoring seasons by a teenager in franchise cricket history
  • Finished with 776 runs at a strike rate above 237
  • Hit 65 sixes during the season, the most by any batter in a single IPL campaign

Yet none of those numbers seemed to matter on Friday night.

For all the records, sixes and milestones, the image that will linger from Rajasthan Royals' exit is that of a tearful 15-year-old wondering what more he could have done.
