French teenager Moise Kouame announced himself on the Grand Slam stage with a stunning straight-sets win over former US Open champion Marin Cilic at the French Open on Tuesday. The 17-year-old wildcard produced a fearless debut performance to win 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1 and become the youngest man to claim a Grand Slam main-draw match victory in 17 years.

Ranked 318th in the world, Kouame controlled the contest on Court Simonne Mathieu, holding his nerve in a tight opening set before taking full command against the experienced Croat.

“It wasn’t easy. I always try to stay in the present moment and not think too much about the score. Today I managed to do that really well,” Kouame said after the match. “It’s a lot of emotion, it’s exceptional. Coming into this tournament, I didn’t really know what to expect. The team and I worked hard to be as ready as possible.”

Cilic, a former world No. 3 and 2014 US Open champion, arrived in Paris with far greater experience and pedigree, but was repeatedly troubled by Kouame’s pace in defence and sharp drop shots. The French teenager did not drop serve once during the match and even saved two set points in the opening set tiebreak before seizing control.

FRANCE HAS A NEW TENNIS SENSATION

The result highlights Kouame’s rapid rise this season, having already won three ITF titles and picked up his first ATP-level victory earlier this year in Miami. Now coached by former French star Richard Gasquet, he continues to benefit from exposure at higher-level events through wildcards, building confidence with every appearance.

“All the experience I gained in Miami and Monte Carlo probably helped me a little,” Kouame told reporters. “Technically, I felt pretty calm. I knew I was ready and I felt good mentally and physically.”

Kouame’s victory places him in rare company, becoming the youngest man to win a Grand Slam match since Bernard Tomic at the 2009 Australian Open. He is also the youngest player to progress past the opening round at Roland Garros since Dinu Pescariu achieved the feat in 1991.

“It’s a lot of emotion, it’s exceptional,” Kouame said. “Coming into this tournament, I didn’t really know what to expect. The team and I worked hard to be as ready as possible.”

He will next face Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, who advanced after 20th seed Cameron Norrie retired due to injury.
