After reclaiming No.1 spot, Jannik Sinner sets sight on French Open glory
Jannik Sinner has set his sights on winning the French Open title after going past Carlos Alcaraz to become the new World No.1 in tennis. Sinner defeated Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday to climb to the top spot.

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the World No.1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz after winning the Monte Carlo Masters final, his first major clay court title. The victory marks a significant milestone as Sinner aims to complete a career grand slam with a strong showing at the French Open. Last year’s French Open final saw Alcaraz save three match points to defeat Sinner in a dramatic fifth-set tiebreak. This recent win at Monte Carlo is Sinner’s first meeting with Alcaraz since that match.
While Sinner acknowledged that reaching No.1 is satisfying, he emphasised that his focus remains on the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments in Paris and London.
"It’s nice, obviously. I would be a liar to say anything else," he said. "But it doesn’t change my thought process. I’m playing to win tournaments and Carlos and I are very close, so the rankings can change from one week to the next."
He added, "There are two big Slams coming up, Paris and London. Let’s see where we are after those tournaments. Right now, I’m focusing more on those than on the ranking. But waking up again as No. 1 is pretty nice."
Sinner also said the ranking reflects his progress.
"It means a lot to me, because it means I’m progressing," he said.
WILL WE SEE SINNER VS ALCARAZ AT MADRID OPEN?
Looking ahead, the Madrid Open is next on the Masters calendar, but Sinner has not yet confirmed his participation. The tournament is in a week's time and could set up another battle between the top two stars in world tennis.
However, the Italian feels that rest is the most important thing right now.
"Now it’s important to rest," he said. "So now I’ll take two or three days without even thinking about tennis and then we’ll decide whether or not to play Madrid."
After reaching the French Open final last year and exiting in the Australian Open semi-final this season, Sinner aims to go one step further at Roland Garros this year and claim the title.
