India gear up for ODIs after sealing Test series whitewash in Sri Lanka

India registered a fantastic win over Sri Lanka in the third and final Test in Pallekele to sweep the series 3-0. The hosts got bowled out for 181 on Day 3 following to lose the match by an innings and 171 runs. Virat Kohli stretched his record as captain to eight successive Test series wins and became the first Indian skipper to beat Sri Lanka in a Test series in Sri Lanka twice. This was also India's first overseas Test series whitewash.

KL Rahul, who scored 85 in India's first innings total of 487 equalled the world record with his seventh successive half-century.

Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya scored magnificent hundreds in the match, while the former bagged the Man of the Series award, the latter became the joint-fastest Indian to score a ton at No. 8.

The next challenge for Virat Kohli is the upcoming five-match ODI series against Lanka starting August 20th. Yuvraj Singh has been dropped from the squad while Manish Pandey has been recalled by the selectors. MS Dhoni has been selected as the lone wicketkeeper.

Moving on, Australia will visit India for a series of five ODIs and three T20Is in September for which they have recalled all-rounder James Faulkner and fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile. Speedster Mitchell Starc has been ruled out through injury.

In other sports news, Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup for the 10th time with a 2-0 win over rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory. Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema ensured Madrid didn't miss the services of Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring a goal each to seal the win. Ronaldo was handed a five-match suspension for pushing the referee in the first leg at Camp Nou which Real won 3-1.

And Former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova will make her first Grand Slam appearance in over 18 months after she was awarded a main draw wildcard for the US Open starting August 28th. Sharapova, who returned from a 15-month doping ban earlier this year, was denied a wildcard at the French Open before she missed the grasscourt season, including Wimbledon, with a thigh injury.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
