Lip locks, naagins, unconventional stories: Here's what Indian TV served its audience in 2015

2015 was a year that saw the Indian television serve its audience a variety of shows. As the saas-bahu stories gave way to supernatural sagas, there were some unconventional shows that found audiences too. Here's a look.

Mature love stories: The trend which was started by Bade Acche Lagte Hain, a couple of years ago, got a push in 2015 with mature loves stories like Ajeeb Dastan hai Yeh, Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar and Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane.

Return of the sitcoms: Sitcom returned to prime time after decades with &TV's Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain and Star Plus' Sumit Sambhal Lega. Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain may as well be called a sleeper hit of 2015, as within a short span of time the show became a rage across the nation.

Literary series: EPIC channel's Stories By Rabindranath Tagore, directed by Anurag Basu was lapped up immediately by the audience because of its freshness and format. Stories By Rabindranath Tagore's success paved way for a few more Literary series like, Lajwanti on Zee TV and Ek Tha Chander Ek This Sudha on Life OK.

Online viewing: Taking a giant technological leap, the Indian television industry made its foray online in 2015. Star Network launched its online channel Hotstar and Sony Entertainment Television went online with Sony Liv.

The Supernatural: 2015 was a year of moving backwards for the Indian television. After exhausting all the possible regressive tracks, the Hindi GECs went back to dark ages in search of new concepts. The female protagonists turned into ghosts, witches, Icchadhari Naagins, Satan worshippers and what not. Cases in point: Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Qubool Hai, Sasural Simar Ka and Naagin.

Lip Locks: 2015 was also a year of saying good bye to small screen demureness. This year, the protagonists were bold, bindaas and had no hesitations smooching. In fact, Sony TV's Reporters and &TV'S Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum used the lip-lock between their protagonists as a promotional tool. A lip-lock between Dino Morea and Shibani Dandekar's lip-lock during their performance in I Can Do That grabbed many eyeballs as well. But it was MTV's The Big F that caused a mini storm with a lesbian lip-lock on one of its episodes.

Bold concepts: While the popular Hindi GECs cashed on to fantasy, youth based channels like MTV and Channel V attempted to break the mold by engaging with mature and bold concepts. MTV's The Big F took a huge leap in this regard by showing a lesbian love story one of its episodes.
