Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone walked into the spotlight on the 2005 Lakme Fashion Week runway at 19, and has not stopped ever since. Model to moviestar to India's representative on global platforms, she has been there and continues doing it all. Over two decades later, Deepika ably juggles her roles as an actor-producer, mental health advocate, entrepreneur, style icon, daughter, wife and mother. 

 

From a girl who grew up in Bengaluru and went on to become one of the most influential icons to emerge from new-age Bollywood, Deepika stands for dreams, discipline and dedication.

 

Born on January 5, 1986, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Deepika relocated to Bengaluru as a child with her parents, Ujjala and Prakash Padukone. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a sporting legend who created history by becoming the first Indian to win the All England Open Badminton Championships in 1980. Deepika's younger sister, Anisha, is a professional golfer.

 

Growing up as the daughter of a sporting hero meant fame and discipline weren't entirely unfamiliar entities for Deepika. Yet, the family always valued achievement over fame. Deepika did play badminton competitively in her younger years but fate had other plans. Modelling opportunities would soon come calling.

 

Deepika was merely a teenager when she emerged as a sought-after model on runways and magazine covers, standing out for her poise and photogenic traits. The camera clearly liked her. In a matter of time, it would be obvious the audience likes her, too.

 

Her acting debut happened in 2006 with the Kannada film, Aishwarya, which saw her play the title character. The Upendra co-starrer film, though was only a trailer of things to come. 

 

Few Bollywood newcomers witness a launch as spectacular as Deepika Padukone's. She entered the world of Hindi films in 2007 opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. Farah Khan's reincarnation drama was the complete mainstream package. Despite SRK's towering presence, and the film's lavish production value and superhit music, Deepika held her own. In dual roles as Shantipriya and Sandy, she brought glamour and assurance to the narrative. Her chemistry with SRK became a talking point, and Om Shanti Om emerged a blockbuster at the box office. A star was born.

 

The immediate years after Om Shanti Om were a learning process, and Deepika was a quick learner. Films such as Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) with Ranbir Kapoor, Love Aaj Kal (2009) co-starring Saif Ali Khan, and Housefull (2010) with Akshay Kumar, saw her rise as a mainstream star. 

 

Deepika Padukone's golden run was only beginning. Cocktail (2012), with Saif Ali Khan and Diana Penty, was a significant turning point. Her portrayal of Veronica, emotionally layered and unlike anything she did before, underlined her growing maturity as an actor. Abbas-Mustan's Race 2 in 2013 was a multistarrer, where she shared screen space with Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez. She stood out thanks to her screen presence and the film's success boosted her commercial standing. Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), opposite Ranbir Kapoor, would go on to become a defining film of youngsters upon release. 

 

Later that same year, she reunited with Shah Rukh Khan in Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express. The mass action comedy was a blockbuster at the box office. In that phase of her career, she would star opposite SRK once again in Happy New Year, Farah Khan's 2014 heist comedy. Co-starring Jackie Shroff, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, the multistarrer entertainer was a box office success, too.

 

For Deepika, a couple of career-defining roles in this phase happened in 2015: Shoojit Sirkar's Piku (2015), co-starring Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan, and Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha, where she returned opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

 

If any single filmmaker significantly elevated Deepika's superstardom, it was Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Their collaboration began in 2013 with Goliyon Ki Rasheeda Ram-Leela, co-starring Ranveer Singh. The film's scale and splendour captivated audiences, while her chemistry with Ranveer gave the romantic tragedy an extra edge.

 

The Deepika-Ranveer-Bhansali team would continue spelling magic in Bajirao Mastani (2015). Deepika delivered a memorable performance, bringing out Mastani's intensity with elegance.

 

Then came Padmaavat (2018), where Bhansali cast her as Rani Padmavati. The film became one of the biggest box-office successes of her career, cemented her stature as one of Indian cinema's most bankable female actors. 

 

Through the three Bhansali films, Deepika and Ranveer's bond developed into something deeper. The couple would get married in November 2018 in an intimate ceremony at Lake Como, Italy. The wedding became one of the most celebrated Bollywood events of its time.

 

Their relationship continues to be admired by fans and, despite enormous public attention, the couple has managed to preserve privacy around their personal lives.

 

Even as she conquered Bollywood, Deepika was building an international profile. In 2017, she made her Hollywood debut opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage. The film marks an important milestone in her career.

 

Deepika's international presence extends beyond the screen, with her international red carpet attendances augmenting her stature. She's walked the Met Gala red carpet thrice and has been a prominent Indian presence at the Cannes Film Festival, serving as a jury member in 2022 and also represented India on the red carpet several times. She has been the Indian face of many global luxury brands and cultural events.

 

Her triumph as an actor and a star lies in the way she has repeatedly adapted to changing audience taste over the years despite maintaining her individuality on and off the screen. while maintaining her star power—an achievement few actors manage.

 

An important aspect of Deepika as a film personality is her filmmaking stint. With Chhapaak (2020), she not only played the lead role of an acid attack victim, but also served as producer. She followed this with 83 (2021), the cricket drama based on India's historic 1983 World Cup victory that starred Ranveer Singh as Indian captain Kapil Dev. These ventures signalled a shift in her career from star to stakeholder, allowing her creative influence on her projects.

 

Among Deepika's most significant contributions is her work in mental health advocacy. After openly discussing her battle with depression, she founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation in 2015, an organisation that works to create awareness, reduce stigma and improve conversations around mental health. The effort continues to be one of the most impactful chapters of her life.

 

Deepika is vocal about women's rights, equality and feminism. Throughout her career, she has spoken about the importance of agency and respect for women. She has continually raised questions about opportunity and dignity.

 

Today, beyond films, Deepika's influence stretches across platforms. She has participated in major stage shows and remains a sought-after celebrity performer. As an entrepreneur, her clothing label, All About You, is popular among young women. In 2022, she launched her self-care and wellness brand, 82E, focused on skincare and well-being.

 

For all her professional achievements, over the years Deepika has revealed another side of her personality. She is a devoted daughter and a loving wife. On September 8, 2024, Deepika and Ranveer welcomed their daughter, Dua Padukone Singh. The family entered another exciting chapter when Deepika and Ranveer announced on April 19, 2026, that they're expecting their second child.

 

In an industry often obsessed with immediate results, Deepika appears focused on building a legacy. Every move suggests she's a personality who is shaping something to outlast box-office numbers and headlines, as an icon and not just a superstar.
