A man described an unusual “argument” he had with an AI-powered hiring system during a job application process, which triggered debate on work struggles and automated technology.

The post, shared on the subreddit r/recruitinghell under the title “I got into an argument with an AI recruiter”, detailed how the candidate attempted to complete an automated interview but ended up frustrated by what he described as an impersonal and dismissive interaction.

According to his account, he initially tried to answer the AI’s questions thoroughly, focusing on relevant experience for the role. However, midway through one of his responses, the system abruptly cut him off with a prompt stating, “That’s great. Next question..” Without allowing him to finish, the AI moved on to the next stage of the interview.

When he tried to clarify that he had not completed his answer and expressed a desire to provide a more accurate response, the system replied, “No worries. Let’s move on.” The man said he repeated his concerns, explaining that he wanted a fair chance to fully answer the questions and requested to speak with a human recruiter instead.

He claimed the AI responded that it could “pass along his information,” but when he insisted on scheduling an appointment with a human interviewer, the system abruptly ended the interaction with a message indicating that the call had concluded.

Frustrated by the experience, the user wrote that the hiring process has become increasingly impersonal, adding that AI-based recruitment systems often feel like they “don’t even pretend to care.” He also acknowledged in an edit that while large language models do not have emotions, he found the interaction ironically humorous in how dismissive it felt.

The post quickly gained traction, with users expressing concern and frustration over the growing use of AI in hiring processes.

One commenter described the situation as deeply discouraging, saying they fear the job market will become increasingly hostile for future generations as human interaction is replaced by automated systems.

Another user called it a “peak dystopia” scenario, arguing that applicants are now being forced to choose between dealing with low-quality automated interviews or facing financial instability.

Others criticised companies for adopting such systems without addressing underlying hiring inefficiencies, with one comment suggesting that the real issue is being ignored while AI tools are deployed as a superficial fix. A more extreme reaction suggested that resistance to such systems may eventually come from insiders intentionally disrupting AI-driven hiring tools to make them less effective.
