A video of a railway staff member tossing garbage off a moving train has struck a nerve online, with many calling out the gap between policy and practice when it comes to cleanliness in India.

The video was posted on X by Divya Gandotra Tandon, who highlighted what she described as a deeper issue of responsibility. In the footage, a staff member aboard the Sdah–Ajmer SF Express can be seen casually throwing garbage onto the tracks while the train is in motion.

Accompanying the video, Tandon wrote, “This is exactly why cleanliness in India struggles, not because systems don’t exist, but because accountability doesn’t.” She further criticised the act, adding, “A railway staff member casually throwing garbage out of a moving train, and then justifying it? This isn’t ignorance, it’s arrogance.”

Her post echoed with several X users who shared similar frustrations about the gap between policy and practice. “If those responsible for maintaining public spaces themselves treat the country like a dustbin, what message does it send to citizens?” she asked, calling for stricter consequences. “Strict action must be taken. Not warnings, not transfers real consequences.”

The incident has once again brought attention to a recurring issue. Over the years, several such videos have surfaced online, showing railway staff resorting to the same method of disposing waste, often seen as a quick fix but one that undermines broader cleanliness efforts.
