A Bali-bound Air India passenger got more than just an international travel experience when she was served a classic halwa-puri-chana combo on board: a meal many online users said belonged more at a family function than 35,000 feet above the ground.

The viral moment was shared by Pune-based X user Priti Jain, who posted a picture of the Air India meal tray online. Amused by the unexpectedly desi menu on an international flight, she wrote that she was probably “the first in my bloodline” to be served halwa-puri-chana on a flight to Bali.

According to her post, the meal was served during an Air India flight from Delhi to Bali. While her husband reportedly refused to eat the puris because they had gone cold, Jain happily finished both meal trays herself.

Halwa, puri and chana is something many Indians associate with temple prasad, festive breakfasts, roadside halwai shops, or family functions, not airline catering on an international route, so naturally the internet was impressed.

Soon, social media users flooded the comments section with jokes and reactions. Some users called it “peak desi luxury”, while others joked that the flight had accidentally turned into a “bhandara at 35,000 feet”. Several people also defended the menu, saying they would gladly prefer authentic Indian comfort food over dry airline sandwiches or underwhelming pasta.

A few users even shared similar experiences of getting poori-sabzi and traditional Indian meals on domestic and international flights, saying Indian airlines often understand one universal truth: nothing comforts passengers quite like familiar food.
