In an exclusive interview with India Today, former NATO deputy commander General Sir Richard Shirreff called the ceasefire between the United States and Iran the greatest strategic disaster for America since the Vietnam war. General Shirreff labelled the conflict a 'masterclass in futility', arguing that despite tactical aerial successes by US and Israeli forces, Iran has emerged with a significant strategic advantage by weaponising the Strait of Hormuz. He criticised President Donald Trump's 'deranged' rhetoric and 'hubris', stating that by accepting Iran's 10-point plan as a basis for negotiation, the US has effectively conceded the initiative. Shirreff warned that the global economy is now 'held hostage' by Iranian control over critical waterways.
