Thiruvaiyaru Assembly Constituency

Tiruvaiyaru, Constituency no 173, is located in the fertile Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu and is part of the Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency. The seat has existed since 1957 and has historically seen strong competition between the Dravidian majors, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam winning the constituency multiple times.
The region is culturally significant, known for its river-fed agriculture and temple heritage, and politically it reflects the broader Cauvery delta pattern where welfare delivery, irrigation, and agrarian concerns strongly influence voter behaviour.

The place is known for memorial of Saint Thyagaraja, a pillar of Carnatic music, hosting the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana festival in January.

Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
