Sunetra Pawar wins Baramati bypoll by over 2 lakh votes
Sunetra Pawar won the Baramati bypoll by more than 2 lakh votes. The result follows a by-election triggered by Ajit Pawar's death in a plane crash in January.

Sunetra Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) registered a landslide victory in the Baramati bypoll, winning by over 2 lakh votes after counting concluded across all 24 rounds.
According to data released by the Election Commission of India, Sunetra Ajit Pawar secured 2,09,921 votes in Assembly Constituency 201 – Baramati, defeating RY Ghutukade of the New Rashtriya Samaj Party, who managed just 935 votes. Pawar’s winning margin stood at a massive 2,09,048 votes.
The bypoll, held on April 23, was necessitated following the death of former Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash near the Baramati airstrip in Pune district on January 28.
Speaking after the results, Jay Pawar said the family did not wish to celebrate the victory. “None of us wanted to have such an election. There has also been an unfortunate incident in neighbouring Bhor tehsil (where a four-year-old child was raped and murdered). We do not wish to celebrate this victory,” he told reporters in Baramati.
Sunetra Pawar also appealed to party workers and supporters to avoid victory processions or celebrations with gulal. She dedicated the mandate to the memory of her late husband Ajit Pawar and urged people to uphold values that reflect his ideals.
Responding to questions about the campaign, Jay Pawar said the success was a collective effort. “I was not alone in this. Every well-wisher was with us in this campaign and voting. We could achieve it only because of it,” he said. He also announced that he would remain available for the constituency’s residents every Thursday to address their concerns.
Commenting on the unopposed appointment of Union Minister and BJP leader Murlidhar Mohol as the chief of the Maharashtra Olympic Association (MOA), a post earlier held by Ajit Pawar, Jay Pawar said the party had wanted to retain the chairman’s position. He added that the matter could be discussed with the chief minister at a later stage, as the bypoll result remained the immediate priority.
