Bail must be granted if trial is not going to conclude earlier: DY Chandrachud

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud spoke on the ‘bail, not jail' principle, Justice Yashwant Varma cash row and other issues. 

On the ‘bail, not jail' principle, DY Chandrachud said, "If the trial is not going to conclude earlier, then irrespective of the stringent requirements of that particular law, bail must be granted to that individual." He also explored the prolonged incarceration of individuals like Umar Khalid, the concept of 'selectivity' in granting bail, and how 'poly vocal courts' with judges holding different philosophies can lead to varied outcomes, impacting the fundamental rights of citizens.
