The Audi RS Q8 Performance is one of those cars that makes a strong case for having absolutely no chill. It is big, expensive, thunderously overpowered and entirely unapologetic about all three. Audi has not built an SUV for shrinking violets here, it has built one for people who think subtlety is overrated and speed should come with a proper V8 soundtrack. The RSQ8 looks the part too. It has the stance of something that has already won the argument, a grille large enough to inhale small weather systems, and the sort of road presence that makes lesser traffic part out of self-preservation. Yet it is not vulgar. There is still enough Audi restraint in the design to stop it from descending into caricature. Think Savile Row muscle, not gym mirror vanity.

Yet it is not vulgar. There is still enough Audi restraint in the design to stop it from descending into caricature. Think Savile Row muscle, not gym mirror vanity.

Then you get to the numbers, and things start becoming faintly ridiculous. The RSQ8 packs a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 631bhp and 850Nm, enough to fling this two-tonne-plus bruiser from 0 to 100kmph in a claimed 3.6 seconds. That is not so much quick for an SUV as faintly absurd for anything with rear seats and a boot. The joy, though, is not just in the speed but in the manner of it. Some fast SUVs feel like blunt instruments with expensive badges. The RSQ8 feels like a heavyweight that learnt ballroom dancing. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, with my baby boy strapped in and utterly delighted by the theatre of it all, it revealed another side to its character. As we swept past the sea and the Mumbai skyline began to soften into a blur beyond the glass, he seemed to enjoy every bit of the rhythm, the rumble, the sense that this was not a drive so much as an event. The quattro system works like a backstage magician, turning all that torque into something devastatingly effective, while the chassis somehow manages to make the whole thing feel smaller, tidier and naughtier than it has any right to.

Inside, Audi does what Audi usually does when it is in a good mood: everything feels refined, expensive and beautifully put together. The cabin is rich with screens, RS-specific graphics and enough sporty detailing to remind you that this is not some ordinary Q8 in a nice suit. Yet the clever bit is that the RSQ8 never becomes tiresome. Leave it in its calmer settings and it behaves like a urbane luxury SUV, making even ordinary family errands feel a little more graceful. Then you prod the RS modes and suddenly the thing clears its throat, tightens up and reveals its true personality. That is what makes it fun. The RSQ8 is not just fast, it is mischievous. It feels like a very polished adult who still knows exactly how to be the most entertaining person in the room.
