Actor Ameesha Patel has sparked debate on social media after calling out Bollywood’s “PR games” and actors 'buying' the superstar status. On Friday, she questioned actors who, according to her, project themselves as top stars without delivering major box-office hits.

In a series of posts on X, Patel argued that the “superstar” tag should come from box-office records and not publicity. She also referred to her own filmography, saying she has delivered three major solo blockbusters, while adding that her “FAKE PR machinery is weak, unlike other actresses."

What Ameesha Patel said

In one post, Patel wrote, “Call yourself a superstar only if you have achieved any sort of work that creates history and havoc at the box office. Until then, stop playing PR games to call yourself a superstar. Sorry, but that's the harsh reality (sic).”

She also wrote that several actors who “haven't even achieved one solo blockbuster” are still calling themselves stars. Patel said doing “2 average films yearly” and being seen on film sets does not make someone a star, but only “an actor who is a part of a project” (sic).

Her criticism of rankings and labels

In another post, Patel questioned actors who, she said, are using PR teams to project themselves as “number 1 and number 2”. She wrote, “Most female actresses who haven't even achieved one film in their career where even a single film of theirs has done even Rs 200 crore plus at the box office are paying their PR teams to call themselves number 1 and number 2 ? Like really? It's 2026 and not 2000, today Rs 100 crore is nothing (sic)”.

Patel added, “A star becomes a global superstar only when he or she delivers a huge hit all over the world. It's always a good feeling for any actor to be a part of any project anywhere in the world. But you only become a superstar once you have delivered those big hits. Stop PR machinery (sic).”

She ended the thread by naming Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), Gadar (2000) or Gadar 2 (2023) and wrote, “Ek nahin par (Not one, but) 3 biggest solo blockbusters as a heroine with the highest footfalls in all 3 films I've given and till date they are the biggest hits of my co-stars as well .. but my FAKE PR machinery is weak unlike other actresses (sic),” she concluded.

Directed by Rakesh Roshan, Ameesha's debut film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai grossed Rs 78.93 crore worldwide.
