Suzuki Jimny EV might see the light of day, electric off-roader spied testing

The Suzuki Jimny has long been celebrated for its off-road prowess, a compact SUV that built its reputation on simplicity, lightness, and genuine go-anywhere ability. Now, it may see the light of the day in an all-electric form, as a prototype has been spotted undergoing testing in extreme winter conditions.

A heavily camouflaged prototype of the Suzuki Jimny EV has been seen in snowy terrain, an indication that development is no longer speculative but actively underway. While Suzuki has not officially confirmed the project, the nature of the testing suggests the vehicle is being evaluated in demanding, low-grip environments, a key requirement for any serious off-roader.

Despite the camouflage, the test vehicle clearly retains the Jimny’s unmistakable design DNA. The upright stance, flat body panels, short overhangs and near-vertical windscreen all remain intact. These elements are not just stylistic, they are central to the Jimny’s off-road capability, and their presence indicates that Suzuki is keen to preserve the SUV’s core identity even in electric form.

The front end, however, reveals subtle but telling changes. The traditional grille appears largely sealed off, a common trait among EVs due to reduced cooling needs. Slim horizontal lighting signatures sit higher up on the fascia, while the lower bumper incorporates openings that are likely functional, possibly aiding thermal management for the battery and associated electronics.

Technical details remain under wraps. The current petrol-powered Jimny uses a 1.5-litre engine producing just over 100bhp, paired with a proper 4WD system and low-range gearing. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup is a strong possibility, potentially drawing from systems already seen in the Suzuki e Vitara, though adapting it for hardcore off-road use would require significant re-engineering.

What an electric Jimny could gain, however, is instantaneous torque delivery, a characteristic that naturally benefits off-road driving, especially in low-speed, high-traction scenarios. The challenge will lie in balancing that advantage with battery weight, which historically has conflicted with the Jimny’s lightweight philosophy.

Inside, while no images have surfaced yet, expectations point toward a familiar, utilitarian layout with EV-specific updates. A revised infotainment system, energy flow displays and range monitoring are likely additions, along with improved refinement thanks to the inherently quieter electric drivetrain.

Interestingly, Suzuki’s stance on electrifying the Jimny has evolved over time. Earlier concerns centred around preserving the model’s lightness and character, qualities that battery packs tend to compromise. However, the emergence of this prototype suggests that the brand may now be exploring ways to overcome those limitations without diluting what makes the Jimny unique.

For now, there is no confirmation on production timelines or target markets. But with prototypes already braving harsh winter conditions, the possibility of an electric Jimny is no longer a distant idea, it is a project that appears to be taking shape, one test mile at a time.
