Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw names niece Claire Mazumdar as successor
Claire Mazumdar is currently the founder and CEO of Bicara Therapeutics, a company that was incubated by Biocon.

Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has shared that she is preparing for a gradual leadership transition over the next five years. While she is not stepping away anytime soon, she has made it clear who she wants to see leading the company in the future.
CLAIRE MAZUMDAR NAMED AS SUCCESSOR
Mazumdar-Shaw said her niece, Claire Mazumdar, is expected to eventually take over as chairperson of Biocon, first reported by Fortune India. The transition, however, will not happen overnight.
She said that she is not planning to step down anytime soon, but wants Claire to succeed her through a phased transition. The process will move step by step, from director to vice-chair and eventually chair, reported Reuters.
Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon in 1978, starting the company from a garage in Bengaluru. Over the years, it has grown into one of the world’s leading biosimilars manufacturers.
Today, Biocon has a market capitalisation of Rs 585.21 billion, according to LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) data. The company earns a significant share of its revenue from the United States and Europe and has built a strong portfolio of over 30 biosimilars, with 12 already launched commercially.
Biosimilars are lower-cost versions of complex biological drugs used to treat conditions such as cancer, diabetes, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Biocon has been among the early players in this space, including developing biosimilar insulin.
KEEPING THE FAMILY LEGACY ALIVE
Mazumdar-Shaw said she wants to ensure that the company’s legacy remains within the family, especially given their significant stake.
She said she wants to ensure the family legacy continues as long as they hold a significant stake in Biocon. She currently owns 29.92% of the company, and family members have also served on the board.
KNOW ABOUT CLAIRE’S BACKGROUND
Claire Mazumdar, 37, is the founding chief executive of Bicara Therapeutics, an oncology-focused biotech firm that was incubated with early backing from Mazumdar-Shaw and listed in 2024.
