The Supreme Court has referred the dispute between Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur, mother and widow of Sunjay Kapur, to mediation after both sides agreed to explore a settlement in the ongoing inheritance case.

Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will mediate the dispute, which centres around the Sona Group family trust.

A Bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan passed the order after all parties agreed to mediation.

“It’s a family dispute; let it be confined among the family only. It should not be a source of entertainment,” the court observed during the hearing.

Rani Kapur had approached the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the family trust and requested that a status quo be maintained on the transfer of properties.

At the previous hearing, the court had issued notice to Priya Kapur, widow of Sunjay Kapur, and suggested that the matter be resolved through mediation.

Following this, the parties agreed to explore settlement options, leading the court to refer the case to mediation under Chandrachud.

The court said it would await a preliminary report from the mediator before proceeding further. The matter is likely to be listed in August.
