Delhi Flood: Yamuna River swells to record levels, evacuations underway | Pics

The water level in Yamuna rose to 208.48 meters on Thursday morning, three metres above the danger mark. 

The water level in Yamuna swelled to 207.71 metres on Wednesday, breaching its 1978 record of 207.49 metres.

The Central Water Commission has called it an "extreme situation" as the water flow into Yamuna is expected to rise even further by 3-4 pm today.

The rising water level in the river triggered fears of flooding in the capital and adjoining areas.

The swollen river has submerged low-lying areas, prompting evacuation measures.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday chaired an emergency meeting and urged people living in low-lying areas near the river to vacate their homes.

So far, over 16,500 people living in low-lying areas have been evacuated as flood fear grips Delhi.

Areas around the Monastery Market, Yamuna Bazar, Garhi Mandu, Geeta Ghat, Vishwakarma Colony, Khadda Colony, the areas around Neeli Chatri temple near Old Railway Bridge, Neem Karoli Gaushala and a stretch of Ring Road from Wazirabad to Majnu Ka Tila remain flooded.

Houses were seen half-submerged in water as Yamuna's level increased, leading to floods in some areas. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the national capital could witness a drinking water crisis in some areas. The Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla Water treatment plants have been shut down as the water level in the river Yamuna hit an all-time high.
