Yamuna's fury: Delhi on high alert as river swells

A flood alert has been issued in the national capital as the Yamuna river continues to swell following incessant rains and the release of over 3 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathni Kund barrage. The water level crossed the 206-meter mark at the old railway bridge on Wednesday morning, surpassing the warning level of 204.5 meters. This situation is reminiscent of the severe floods in July 2023, when the river reached its highest-ever level of 208.66 meters, and the historic 1978 deluge. Authorities are taking measures, including opening the gates of the Wazirabad and ITO barrages, to manage the flow. While residents in low-lying areas face displacement and hardship, some devotees remain undeterred, expressing their faith with a powerful quote: "She will give mud, we will live in mud. She will give water, we will live in water."
