A Lucknow University professor has been arrested for allegedly engaging in obscene phone conversations with a female student and attempting to lure her by offering to leak an examination question paper.

The accused, Paramjeet Singh, an assistant professor in the university’s Zoology Department, was taken into custody after an audio recording allegedly featuring him went viral on social media.

In the clip, he is reportedly heard requesting sexual favours from a final-year BSc student and allegedly saying, "Darling, I have arranged the exam paper for you. Come back before the exam, and I will give it to you here."

The student reportedly suffered severe mental distress and informed the university administration about the matter, following which Controller of Examinations Vidyanand Tripathi lodged a formal complaint with the police.

An FIR has since been registered at Hasanganj Police Station, and the accused professor is currently being questioned.

Singh, however, has denied all allegations, claiming he is being deliberately framed and targeted due to “internal politics” within the university.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor JP Saini has directed the Internal Complaints Committee to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours.

In a press release, the university administration said that “any act damaging the institution’s dignity and academic environment would not be tolerated,” adding that the university follows a “zero-tolerance” policy in such matters.

Following the emergence of the audio clip, workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged demonstrations on the university campus, demanding the immediate suspension of the accused professor.

“There is no place for such cheap and perverted mentality in a prestigious institution,” said Jay Srivastava, president of the ABVP’s Lucknow University unit.

He added that the accused should be jailed on charges of sexual harassment and compromising the integrity of the examination process.
