What began as a minor dispute between children escalated into a violent confrontation.

A domestic dispute in Maharashtra’s Pune district ended in tragedy after a 29-year-old man allegedly strangled his three-year-old daughter to death and attempted to kill his five-year-old son, who survived and was later found crying near a forest patch along the Pune-Nashik highway.

Police arrested Sagar Sadashiv Shinde, a resident of Gaikwad Basti in Moshi, for allegedly killing his daughter Harshada and abandoning her body in a forested area in Junnar tehsil. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning after passersby spotted his son Aryan crying near the forest patch at Santwadi and alerted the police.

According to officials from Alephata police station, Shinde had frequent fights with his wife, who had left him along with the two children six months ago. Police said the crime was linked to the ongoing domestic strife between the couple.

Investigators said Shinde took Aryan and Harshada to the area on Tuesday on the pretext of an outing. After Aryan was found, police contacted the children’s grandparents and launched a search operation for the accused.

Police tracked Shinde down after he returned home and allegedly tried to mislead family members by claiming the children were staying at a rented room in Chakan. His relatives grew suspicious and informed the police.

During questioning, Shinde allegedly told police that he tried to kill both children by strangulation, but Aryan survived. Police arrested him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges of murder and other offences.
