Explained: Why India should worry about the Delta variant

Delta variant, which was first detected in India and named so by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is now a Sars-2 variant of global concern. Studies indicate that the Delta variant was behind the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India.

According to the WHO, the Delta variant has now been reported from about 75 countries.

The Gavi Vaccine Alliance believes that the Delta variant is making patients become sicker and their condition deteriorates faster than in cases of infections caused by previous variants.
