Director David Frankel has said he would be open to returning for a third The Devil Wears Prada film. His comment came after the sequel's strong box office run led to speculation around another instalment.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunited actors Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci nearly 20 years after the original film.

Frankel said he had not expected to make a second film in the first place. But with the sequel performing well and conversation around part three growing, he made it clear that he would be willing to revisit the story if the right opportunity came along. The cast, too, has said that any third film would depend on a strong script and all the principal actors agreeing to return.

Frankel on the possibility of part three

In an interview with Variety, Frankel said, "I said, ‘Never again,’ and here we are. So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again,’ again."

"If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it," he added when asked if he would consider returning for another chapter.

Old favourites and new faces

The filmmaker also spoke about expanding the franchise with fresh faces. Frankel said, "There are very, very funny people in this movie. Justin Theroux is hilarious. BJ Novak is hilarious. Caleb Hearon is hilarious. Simone Ashley, in little moments, steals every scene. Helen J Shen is brilliant. So, it’s just nice to bring in a new generation of actors and let them play."

Balancing nostalgia with a new story

Frankel also recalled Hathaway's description of the sequel and said, "We were getting the band back together for a new album and going on tour and playing the new songs, but the audience also wants to hear the old hits. So, it’s a little bit of sprinkling in the old hits with the new stuff."

In a separate interview, Streep, Hathaway and Blunt also spoke about what would be needed for a third film. Speaking to People, Streep said it would come down to "The script." Blunt agreed, saying, "A good script. It's all about the script," while Hathaway said that "everybody has to say yes."

Blunt added that it would also need "the core four", referring to the three actors and Stanley Tucci. Streep then joked, "They have to be alive."
