IIT Kanpur launches 4 online MTech courses in AI, energy and smart grids
IIT Kanpur has launched four new online MTech programmes under its second postgraduate admission cycle. The move is aimed at building industry-ready skills in AI, infrastructure, energy and smart systems.

IIT Kanpur has taken a major step in expanding access to higher technical education by launching four new online MTech programmes under its second cycle of Online Postgraduate admissions.
The announcement was made on May 15, 2026, by the institute through its Office of Outreach Activities.
The move reflects a growing demand for specialised expertise in fast-evolving sectors such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure development, clean energy, and advanced power systems.
With this expansion, IIT Kanpur aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.
NEW AGE COURSES FOR NEW AGE SKILLS
The newly introduced programmes include:
MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
MTech in Construction Engineering and Project Management
MTech in Smart Grid
MTech in Sustainable Energy Technologies
These courses are designed to meet the needs of modern industries where technology and innovation are rapidly transforming job roles and skill requirements.
From intelligent systems to renewable energy solutions, the programmes cover sectors that are expected to dominate future employment markets.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING, IIT QUALITY
All four MTech programmes are fully online and Senate-approved by IIT Kanpur. The duration of the courses ranges from two to four years, allowing flexibility for learners.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION PROCESS
Admission to the programmes follows a structured evaluation process:
Eligibility criteria
Minimum CPI of 5.5 or 55 percent in qualifying degree
GATE-qualified candidates may receive exemption from entrance test
Candidates with five or more years of relevant experience may also be exempted (subject to department rules)
Sponsored candidates from government, defence, or recognised organisations may be eligible for exemptions
Selection process
Stage 1: Online entrance test conducted by IIT Kanpur
Stage 2: Department-level evaluation via interview or online assessment
