UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 tomorrow: Key details, banned items and reporting time

Candidates appearing for the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 on May 24 must carry all essential documents and stationery items mentioned in the official instructions.
The Commission has asked candidates to verify details such as name, photograph, and QR code on the e-admit card before reaching the centre.
WHAT YOU MUST CARRY
Printed copy of the UPSC e-admit card

Original photo identity card mentioned in the admit card
Black ballpoint pen
Pencil
Transparent water bottle
Passport-size photographs, if applicable
Candidates whose photographs on the admit card are unclear must carry two passport-size photographs along with a signed undertaking for each session.
WHAT TIME SHOULD CANDIDATES REACH THE EXAM CENTRE?
UPSC has clearly stated that candidates must report early for frisking and identity verification.
Gate closing timings:
Morning session: Entry closes at 9 am
Afternoon session: Entry closes at 2 pm
No candidate will be allowed to enter after the gates close, even if they arrive a few minutes late.
Candidates have also been advised to visit the exam centre at least one day before the examination to avoid confusion on exam day.
WHICH ITEMS ARE STRICTLY BANNED INSIDE THE EXAM HALL?
The Commission has imposed strict restrictions on electronic devices and valuables.
Prohibited items include:
Mobile phones, even in switched-off mode
Smart watches
Bluetooth devices
Cameras and pagers
Pen drives and electronic gadgets
Bags and luggage
UPSC has clarified that it will not be responsible for the loss of personal belongings. Candidates should avoid carrying unnecessary items as many centres may not have storage facilities.
Only simple wristwatches without communication features will be allowed inside the hall.
WHAT OTHER IMPORTANT RULES SHOULD CANDIDATES REMEMBER?
Answers marked using pens other than black ballpoint pens will not be evaluated
Negative marking will apply in both papers
Candidates must appear only at the allotted examination centre
Candidates using their own scribes must carry a separate e-admit card for the scribe
Those who changed their name after matriculation must carry valid government-issued proof in the changed name
UPSC has also announced that provisional answer keys for the Preliminary Examination will be released after the exam concludes.
