Diphu Assembly Election 2026
Diphu Assembly Constituency

Diphu, the administrative headquarters of Karbi Anglong district, is a Scheduled Tribe-reserved Assembly constituency and one of the six segments of the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency, earlier known as the Autonomous District parliamentary constituency. Diphu Assembly constituency incorporates Diphu and Bakulia Municipal Boards, Manja, Borlangpher, Dhansiri and Phuloni Town Committees, along with Lumbajong and Langsomepi development blocks. The constituency consists of the town area and surrounding villages, giving it a semi-urban to predominantly rural outlook with a significant coverage of hilly and forested areas in the Karbi Anglong region. It remains largely rural with 78.08 per cent rural voters compared to 21.92 per cent urban electors, dominated by Karbi tribal communities, other indigenous groups, and smaller non-tribal populations tied to administration, trade, and education.

Established in 1978, Diphu has participated in 10 Assembly elections so far. It has given a mixed verdict since its inception. While the Janata Party won the inaugural 1978 election, the Congress party has won this seat thrice, and the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Independents and the BJP have held the seat twice each.

Bidyasing Engleng, the sitting Congress MLA after having won the seat in 2001 and 2006, won his third consecutive term in 2011, defeating George Millick, an Independent politician, by a margin of 12,471 votes. The BJP put a halt to the Congress’s winning spree in 2016 with Sum Ronghang defeating incumbent Bidyasing Engleng by 28,236 votes. They locked horns again in 2021 under a comical situation of cross-defection. Ronghang contested on the Congress ticket and Engleng on the BJP symbol. Engleng won his fourth term and second for the BJP by prevailing over Ronghang by a big margin of 40,528 votes.

Voting trends witnessed during the Lok Sabha election mirror a similar trend of the Congress party ceding ground to the BJP in the Diphu Assembly segment. Congress led ASDC by 18,758 votes in 2009. The BJP, which languished at the third spot, rushed past them to establish a lead of 10,806 votes over Congress in 2014, 58,351 votes in 2019, which declined to 25,636 votes in 2024, though not enough to cause a big concern to the BJP in light of a big drop of 9.20 percentage points in the voter turnout compared to 2019.

Demographics, based on available data, largely from the 2011 Census proportions adjusted for the area, highlight a strong Scheduled Tribe majority (around 55-60 per cent in the constituency), with minimal Scheduled Castes and Muslims. The electorate features a mix of Karbi, the principal tribal community, other indigenous groups like Dimasa, Bodo, and smaller tribes, alongside non-tribal settlers in urban pockets linked to administration, education, and trade, contributing to its tribal-dominated rural character.

The Diphu constituency covers parts of the Karbi Anglong district with hilly terrain, undulating plateaus, rolling semi-deciduous hills, and some flat valleys as part of the Karbi plateau, an extension of the Meghalaya Plateau. The terrain supports jhum cultivation, settled paddy farming in valleys, horticulture, forest-based activities, and some tea plantations, but is prone to occasional landslides and seasonal flooding from rivers like the Dhansiri, Kopili, and their tributaries. Livelihoods in Diphu depend mainly on agriculture (paddy, ginger, turmeric, and other spices), forest resources, government employment, small trade, and education-related activities in the Assam University Diphu Campus. Fertile valley soils and abundant rainfall sustain these activities.

Infrastructure includes road connectivity via national highways linking to nearby areas, rail access at Diphu station, a key stop on the Northeast Frontier Railway, and basic amenities in the town, with ongoing developments in rural roads, tribal welfare, and connectivity.

The nearby towns include Hojai to the west, roughly 80-90 km away, and Bokajan farther south. The state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, lies around 200-270 km west (about 213 km by rail and 270 km by road). The constituency borders Nagaland to the east, with Dimapur approximately 100-120 km away, influencing cross-border trade and interactions.

Over the past 12 years, Diphu has emerged as a BJP stronghold with the party winning two consecutive Assembly elections and leading in the last three parliamentary polls. The BJP is set to go to the 2026 Assembly elections with the tag of favourite to retain the seat. The Congress may have to punch above its weight to sustain its hope of knocking out the BJP and winning the Diphu Assembly constituency.

Assam CM Oath Ceremony Highlights: BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Chief Minister for a second consecutive term, days after leading the NDA back to power for a third straight stint in the state. The ceremony drew Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and several NDA chief ministers. The NDA returned to power with a sweeping two-thirds majority in last month’s Assembly polls. The BJP alone won 82 seats, marking the first time that the party got past the majority mark of 64. Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in Assam to secure two back-to-back terms as chief minister. Stay tuned to indiatoday.tech for all updates.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
