In perhaps the sharpest attack against the Trinamool Congress over the RG Kar rape-murder case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the victim's mother worked hard to make her a doctor, but "lost her" to "TMC's jungle raj". Addressing an election rally in Dum Dum along with the mother of the RG Kar victim, PM Modi stressed that the TMC failed to protect women and instead silenced their demands for justice.

"The mother helped her daughter become a doctor. That daughter was taken away from her by TMC. We have made that mother a candidate," PM Modi said. Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape victim, has been fielded by the BJP from her hometown, Panihati, in the Bengal elections. On Friday, she was present on the stage with the prime minister.

PM MODI RAKES UP RG KAR, SANDESHKHALI

The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested and handed a life term amid widespread nationwide outrage over the incident. A postmortem report said she was raped, throttled and smothered to death.

In Bengal, the protests snowballed into a wider indictment of the Mamata Banerjee government's handling of law and order. PM Modi appeared to be channelling that sentiment while attacking the TMC.

The Prime Minister also cited Sandeshkhali, which grabbed attention in 2024 over land grab and sexual assault allegations, saying the BJP had given leadership opportunities to victims there. He accused the TMC, which is eyeing a fourth straight term, of discouraging women from speaking out.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP gave a ticket to Rekha Patra, one of the Sandeshkhali victims, from Basirhat in West Bengal. Patra, however, lost the polls.

"When the daughters of Bengal seek justice, the TMC tells them not to step out of their homes to avoid rape. TMC does not want women to dream," PM Modi further said.

Past elections have shown how women voters have come to play a decisive role in electoral outcomes. The BJP knows very well that women voters have been Mamata's pillar of strength in past elections. It explains why PM Modi has gone hard against the TMC over women's safety.

Before signing off, PM Modi underlined that the BJP would not allow anyone to trample the dreams of daughters of Bengal.

"On May 4, after the BJP government is formed, files will be opened over all the atrocities caused against women. This is Modi's guarantee," the Prime Minister said.
