TVK office set on fire in Tamil Nadu, CCTV shows 2 men getting off bike at site

Two miscreants vandalised and set a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on fire in Tamil Nadu's Srirangam ahead of the May 4 Assembly poll counting, police said. A CCTV footage surfaced showing two men stopping outside the office before entering the TVK office premises and later fleeing the spot on Thursday night.

The following morning, posters of TVK and party chief Vijay were found torn down at the office.

Police said TVK had not registered a complaint yet and no injuries were reported.

"It was a small office. Not much damage was reported. Two people had set the office on fire. The method of lighting the fire is also being probed," a Srirangam police official said.

EXIT POLLS PREDICT GRAND ENTRY FOR TVK

The incident came against the backdrop of several exit polls projecting a blockbuster debut for the TVK, with some surveys predicting the party could emerge as a major force in Tamil Nadu. An Axis My India exit poll gave the biggest boost to the TVK, projecting 98-120 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

Other pollsters have offered more cautious estimates. Today’s Chanakya projected TVK at 52-74 seats, while Kamakhya Analytics forecast 67-81 seats, indicating that Vijay’s party could play a significant role even if it falls short of a majority. A party needs 118 seats to form the government.

Tamil Nadu voted in a single phase on April 23 and recorded a bumper turnout of 85.14 per cent. Results will be declared on May 4.

Earlier on Thursday, TVK candidate N Marie Wilson said Vijay instructed all candidates during a meeting to reach counting centres by 6 am on the result day and remain vigilant throughout the process.

Speaking to the media, the RK Nagar candidate said Vijay told them to stay at the front, closely monitor the counting proceedings and “not move an inch” until the exercise was complete.
