Same cassette: Abhishek Banerjee slams Amit Shah over infiltrators remarks

Amit Shah had tacitly said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was more interested in positioning Abhishek, her nephew, as her successor at the helm of the state government instead of addressing people's sufferings.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the latter attacked his party over illegal immigration in West Bengal. Addressing an election rally in Paschim Medinipur district, Shah had accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of protecting infiltrators.

Responding to this, Abhishek took sharp aim at Shah, saying the BJP leader was "rehearsing the same cassette" over and over again about ghuspetiyas (infiltrators). He also lambasted the BJP over the gruesome terror attack in Pahalgam and the deadly car blast in Delhi last year.

"If you are in power to safeguard the borders, then why did such an attack happen in Pahalgham. How come a blast happened in Delhi?" the TMC leader asked as he launched a scathing attack on Shah.

The remarks came hours after Shah unveiled the BJP's election manifesto for West Bengal, where Assembly polls are slated to be held later this month.

"Mamata Banerjee wants to protect infiltrators, but the BJP wants to detect, delete and deport infiltrators... Mamata ji, no matter how hard you try, we will drive out every illegal immigrant from West Bengal," the Union Minister had said.

"We will not only seal Bengal's borders against infiltrators but also ensure that not a single cow is smuggled out of India through Bengal," Shah stated while presenting the poll manifesto, named Sankalp Patra, at an event in Kolkata.

Besides vowing to crack down on illegal immigration, the BJP has also promised a monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 for women and implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within six months if the party is voted to power in the state.

The promise of monthly aid also drew a sharp rebuke from Abhishek, who highlighted that eligible women in Delhi were yet to receive the financial assistance promised to them by the BJP before last year's Delhi Assembly polls.

"Before the 2025 election in Delhi, PM [Narendra Modi] promised Rs 2,500 per month to every woman of Delhi. But till now, they haven't provided anything to any woman," he said, asserting that women in West Bengal are receiving monthly financial aid under the Mamata-led government's flagship 'Lakshmir Bhandar' scheme without fail.
