Debra Assembly Election 2026
Debra Assembly Constituency

Debra, a block-level town in Kharagpur subdivision of Paschim Medinipur district, is a general category Assembly constituency forming part of the Ghatal parliamentary seat. Earlier, it belonged to the Panskura Lok Sabha constituency. Established in 1957, Debra has gone through several boundary changes, and its electoral history can be divided into three phases.

Between 1957 and 1972, the constituency saw six elections, with the Congress party dominating by winning four times and its offshoot, Bangla Congress, registering twin wins. In the second phase, from 1977 to 2006, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) took command with seven straight victories, including five consecutive terms by Sheikh Jahangir Karim from 1987 to 2006.

The Delimitation Commission’s 2006 order redrew boundaries, making Debra a predominantly rural Assembly constituency consisting of the entire Debra community development block, now under the Ghatal parliamentary seat.

Since 2011, the Trinamool Congress has swept all three Assembly polls with three different candidates. Radhakanta Maiti won in 2011, defeating Sorab Hossein of the CPI(M) by 8,813 votes. In 2016, Selima Khatun beat CPI(M)’s Jahangir Karim by 11,908 votes. In 2024, Humayun Kabir of Trinamool Congress defeated BJP’s Bharati Ghosh by a margin of 11,226 votes, while CPI(M) was pushed to third position.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front’s slide began in 2019 when the BJP jumped from third to take the lead in the parliamentary segment with a margin of 4,019 votes, establishing itself as Trinamool’s principal challenger. Trinamool Congress regained the lead in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, overtaking the BJP by 5,766 votes. The Left Front, even with Congress as an ally, saw its vote share fall to 7.95 per cent in 2024.

Debra constituency had 239,509 registered voters in 2024, compared to 234,184 in 2021 and 226,070 in 2019. The Scheduled Caste electorate stands at 20.48 per cent, with Scheduled Tribes constituting 13 per cent, and Muslims making up 10.40 per cent of voters. Urban electors are just 4.78 per cent, while 95.22 per cent are rural. Voter turnout has been robust, hitting 92.67 per cent in 2011, dropping to 89.18 per cent in 2016, 85.95 per cent in 2019, and climbing back to 87.48 per cent in 2021.

Debra lies in the south-western part of West Bengal, with topography marked by alluvial plains, gentle slopes, and some hard laterite uplands in the wider district. Major rivers like Kangsabati, Silabati, and Subarnarekha flow close to the area, affecting local agriculture and land drainage; embankments and flooding are routine features. The region supports the cultivation of paddy, jute, vegetables, mustard, and pulses, with pockets of mango and guava orchards. Forested tracts across Paschim Medinipur district, dominated by sal, teak and babul trees, are not far from Debra, although the block itself is mainly agricultural. The economy depends on farming, fisheries, small trading, and rural crafts, with infrastructure comprising schools, markets, health centres, local roads, and a railway station well-connected to Kharagpur and Medinipur.

Debra is important as a junction along the National Highway and enjoys good road and rail connectivity. Kharagpur, the subdivision headquarters, is about 30 km away, and the district headquarters, Midnapore, is 28 km distant. Tamluk in Purba Medinipur is roughly 43 km away, and Uluberia in Howrah district is 59 km from Debra. Kolkata, the state capital, is 87 km to the east.

Debra stands on a razor’s edge, given its record of close contests in recent elections. The constituency could see another intriguing battle between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in 2026. Any revival of the Left Front-Congress alliance will add another layer of drama and increase anxiety for the Trinamool Congress, making the contest worth watching.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
