Para Assembly Election 2026
Para Assembly Constituency

Para, a Scheduled Caste reserved Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Purulia district, is one of the seven segments under the Purulia Lok Sabha seat. It comprises the Para and Raghunathpur II community development blocks and falls within the Raghunathpur subdivision, which marks the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur plateau.

Established in 1962, Para has gone to the polls 16 times, including the 2009 by-election. The CPI(M) held the seat for eight consecutive terms during the Left Front’s dominance in the state, beginning in 1977 and ending with its last win in the 2009 bypoll. The Congress party won the seat four times, while its offshoots, the Bangla Congress and the Trinamool Congress, won twice and once respectively. In 2021, the BJP, considered a rank outsider until then, stunned the established players when its nominee Nadir Chand Bouri defeated Umapada Bauri by 3,657 votes. Umapada Bauri had earlier won the seat in 2011 on a Congress ticket and in 2016 as a Trinamool candidate. The CPI(M), once the dominant force, was pushed to a distant third in 2021.

The BJP had already signalled its arrival in Para during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, leading the Trinamool Congress by 41,242 votes in this segment. That lead shrank to 8,250 votes in the 2024 parliamentary polls, suggesting a tightening contest.

Para had 243,906 registered voters in 2021, which rose to 255,933 in 2024. Scheduled Castes accounted for 34.42 per cent of the electorate, Scheduled Tribes for 5.61 per cent, and Muslims for 14.40 per cent. Voter turnout has remained robust but has been gradually declining, with 82.15 per cent in 2016, 80.26 per cent in 2019, 79.56 per cent in 2021, and 75.50 per cent in 2024.

The terrain of Para is rugged and undulating, influenced by its location on the Chota Nagpur plateau. The region is dotted with low hills and lateritic soil, and is drained by rivers like the Damodar and the Kangsabati. The area is rich in forest cover, with dry deciduous vegetation dominated by Sal, Palash, Mahua, and Kusum trees. The forests support a variety of flora and fauna, including elephants that occasionally migrate from neighbouring Jharkhand.

Economically, Para leans on agriculture, forest products, and mining. The region is known for its coal and dolomite reserves, and nearby Raghunathpur hosts several industrial units, including power plants and cement factories. Cottage industries and stone quarrying also contribute to the local economy.

Infrastructure is modest but improving. Para is connected by road to Raghunathpur, the subdivision headquarters, located about 18 km away. Purulia town, the district headquarters, lies roughly 35 km to the south. The state capital Kolkata is about 280 km away, while Patna, the capital of Bihar, is approximately 240 km to the north. Para shares borders with Jharkhand, and nearby towns include Bokaro at 65 km, Dhanbad at 70 km, and Jamshedpur at 110 km. Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is around 130 km from Para.

Historically, the region around Para has been part of the ancient Manbhum district and carries traces of tribal and folk traditions. The area is known for its terracotta temples, folk dances like Chhau, and its role in the cultural mosaic of western Bengal. While Para itself may not boast of grand historical landmarks, its surroundings echo with the rhythms of tribal heritage and agrarian resilience.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, Para braces for a fierce contest between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. The BJP holds a slight edge, but its reduced margins in recent elections suggest anything but comfort. The Left Front-Congress alliance appears to be in disarray, with little sign of revival after polling just 7.06 per cent and 6.72 per cent in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The battle lines are drawn between the party that rules the Centre and the one that governs the state. In Para, every vote will matter and count.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
