HBO renews Harry Potter series for second season ahead of first episode release
HBO has renewed its upcoming Harry Potter series for a second season months before the release of the first instalment. The next chapter is expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with filming set to begin this autumn.

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has already secured a second season renewal, nearly seven months before the first episode of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to premiere. The early greenlight signals the network’s confidence in the ambitious adaptation, with the next chapter expected to cover Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming for the second season is expected to begin this autumn. HBO’s creative team had previously revealed plans to adapt each of JK Rowling’s seven books across individual seasons, making Chamber of Secrets the likely focus of the newly renewed instalment. However, the network has not officially confirmed the title yet.
The report also mentioned that season 1 showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and writer Jon Brown, known for Succession, have now been promoted to co-showrunners.
Francesca said in an official statement, “As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish season one by Christmas and to return to production for season two this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum.”
She further shared that she had enjoyed working with Jon ever since they first met on Succession and praised him for both his writing and collaborative nature, adding that the team was lucky to have him on board.
Jon Brown also expressed his excitement about continuing with the franchise, stating that writing Philosopher’s Stone had been a joyful experience. He thanked Francesca and HBO for trusting him to continue the journey and remarked that one is never too old to receive an invitation to Hogwarts.
Meanwhile, HBO is yet to announce when the second season will premiere. The timeline remains a key point of interest as the young cast continues to grow during the lengthy production process.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, HBO would have spent around 17 months on Philosopher’s Stone after cameras rolled on season one in July 2025. With filming for the second season expected to begin this autumn, the network will have comparatively less time to prepare Chamber of Secrets for release.
