Farewell Sridevi: A look at the career of Bollywood's first female superstar

Sridevi, unarguably India's first female superstar, died late Saturday night in Dubai where she was attending a wedding.

The legendary actress died due to accidental drowning, says her death certificate.

She started off her career at the age of four, playing the role of Lord Murugan in Kandhan Karunai.

Sridevi was a force to reckon with in South cinema. Though she chose to concentrate on Bollywood by the late 70s, her contribution to Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film industries is undeniable.

Having worked in a male-dominated industry five decades, Sridevi literally stood tall with her earnest performances, ethereal beauty, amazing comic timing and her lively dance performances.

She started acting in lead roles from 1976, and it was late director K Balachander who cast her opposite Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in Moondru Mudichu.
