Click, report, earn: Government offers Rs 1,000 for dirty toll toilets
A simple photo could now earn you Rs 1,000. The government's latest initiative turns commuters into watchdogs, rewarding them for reporting unclean toll plaza toilets and pushing for better hygiene across India's highways.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in collaboration with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has launched an innovative citizen-driven initiative that rewards commuters for reporting unhygienic conditions at toll plaza toilets.
Under the campaign, commuters can earn a reward of 1,000 (credited via FASTag) simply by clicking and submitting a photograph of an unclean toilet at any toll plaza. The idea is straightforward: empower road users to act as watchdogs and ensure accountability in maintaining hygiene standards.
This incentive-based approach taps into public participation, turning everyday travellers into contributors to a cleaner infrastructure ecosystem.
HOW THE CHALLENGE WORKS
Participants are required to:
Click a clear photo of an unclean toilet at a toll plaza
Submit it through the designated platform (as per MoRTH/NHAI guidelines)
Upon verification, receive 1,000 as FASTag credit
The initiative is part of the “Clean Toilet Picture Challenge,” which has now been extended until June 30, 2026.
WHY THIS INITIATIVE MATTERS
Public sanitation at highways has long been a concern for travellers in India. Despite infrastructure upgrades, maintenance gaps often persist. By incentivising users to report issues, authorities aim to:
Improve cleanliness standards across toll plazas
Ensure timely maintenance and monitoring
Increase transparency and accountability
This model also reflects a broader shift toward participatory governance, where citizens play an active role in improving public services.
TECHNOLOGY MEETS PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
With the widespread use of smartphones and FASTag systems, the campaign leverages technology to streamline reporting and rewards. It aligns with India’s push toward digital governance, making the process quick, trackable, and efficient.
A STEP TOWARDS CLEANER HIGHWAYS
The campaign underscores a larger vision clean, accessible, and hygienic facilities for millions of daily commuters. While 1,000 may be the immediate incentive, the long-term impact lies in sustained cleanliness and improved travel experiences.
As the campaign tagline suggests, keeping toll plaza toilets clean is a shared responsibility. And now, citizens have both the power and a reason to act.
