Bhooth Bangla, Golmaal or De De Pyaar De: Dash of comedy amps any Bollywood genre

Akshay Kumar's Bhooth Bangla is the latest horror hit that successfully blends the scares with comedy. When it comes to instant connect, humour adds to the impact of every other genre, be it action, family drama or more. Think the Golmaal films or De De Pyaar De.

Sitting in the theatre, laughing through the punchlines of Bhooth Bangla, it hits me: this is Akshay Kumar and director Priyadarshan in their elements again. The duo has proved in the past with Bhool Bhulaiyaa that they're aces at mixing scares and chuckles. They've done it again with Bhooth Bangla, it's working. Because when fear meets fun, the impact is unexpected.

The Bhooth Bangla space of horror-comedy has become popular in Bollywood, with filmmakers blending the fear factor with laughter in their projects for a while now. It's been tried lately in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa films, the Stree films, Bhediya, Munjya and Thamma, just to name a few, and with success in most cases. Blending spooky basics with laughs can be quite a scream, a reliable crowd-pleaser.

Comedy, sure, is a shapeshifter. A chameleon that slips into other storytelling spaces, to add colour, to make them more enjoyable.

Beyond Bhooth Bangla and horror comedy, just think how comedy mixed with just about any genre always makes the end result stand out. What is so special about humour that it elevates even the most intense stories, making them more engaging and memorable for audiences?

Add some laughs for mass appeal

Put simply, comedy mixed with other genres makes them more accessible to the masses. It's a formula that has worked forever, in mainstream cinema around the world.

Let's talk new-age Bollywood. Do you remember Rajkummar Rao’s version of Calm down or Aparshakti Khurrana singing Soft Chitti amid the terrifying drama of Stree 2 (2024), Bollywood's biggest horror hit ever? The film didn’t just scare audiences; it made them laugh, also think a bit, and quote the dialogues.

The humour grounded the supernatural, making it feel oddly relatable. It turned a local legend into a nationwide phenomenon, leaving fans hooked on the punches. More importantly, it proved that audiences love it when emotions blend with the right balance. They want a mix of everything – served on a single platter with comedy being a must ingredient.

Moving away from horror comedies, think crime comedy. From Hera Pheri in 2000 to Housefull 5 in 2025, the idea of cocktailing crime and comedy has almost always worked. Indeed, a twist of comedy gives the crime drama a rewatch value.

The same goes for the action genre. The Golmaal series, for instance, in recent times has shown how filmmaker Rohit Shetty, who knows how to mix heavy-duty action with good, clean fun, can spin out a box office winner every time. Bodyguard, Singh Is Kinng and All The Best are some random recalls of films that blended action with comedy to score at the box office in recent years. A multi-star cast, a situational comedy born out of chaos, exaggeration, and absurdity, layered with familiar narrative structures, create something uniquely entertaining.

The right humour is a must for satire

What if we tell you that comedy, when blended well with social themes, can turn powerful messages into unforgettable cinema? Just think Munna Bhai MBBS or 3 Idiots, where humour makes the message more relatable, impactful and loved.

It's all in the family drama, too

Drama woven around family stands to gain from comedy, too. Just look at the De De Pyaar De films or the Welcome franchise, where over-the-top drama and chaos meet humour, relationships find warmth through laughter, and familiar tropes turn into entertaining experiences.

Maybe that’s the superpower of comedy: it doesn’t just make you laugh; it makes everything else work better. It softens fear, lightens drama and, most importantly, brings audiences closer to the story.

Bhooth Bangla is just the latest reminder that while genres may evolve and storytelling may change, the charm of humour remains timeless. Because no matter what the backdrop is – horror, drama, romance, or crime – if a film can make you laugh, it has already won half the battle.
