Filmmaker Karan Johar had a full-circle fan moment when he sat down with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway to discuss their upcoming film, The Devil Wears Prada 2. But it was Streep’s sharp, humorous comeback during the conversation that quickly became a standout moment.

While interacting with the two stars, Johar couldn’t stop gushing about how they seemed unchanged even two decades after The Devil Wears Prada.

“I just want to say what has happened? Why is this Benjamin Button phenomenon ruling these two wonderful ladies?” he said, praising their ageless appearances.

Streep, staying true to her dry wit, immediately responded, “You need a new prescription," pointing at his glasses.

The room burst into laughter, with Hathaway joining in, adding to the playful exchange. Johar, not missing a beat, joked that his glasses were purely for style and that his “reading glasses” were elsewhere, continuing the light-hearted banter.

A candid and playful interaction

The moment perfectly captured the tone of the conversation—easy, humorous, and deeply affectionate. Johar, who has often spoken about his admiration for Streep, described the interaction as an “out-of-body experience,” admitting he has watched the original film over 200 times.

Beyond the laughs, the trio discussed returning to a globally loved story after nearly 20 years. Streep spoke about how the sequel reflects a changed world shaped by digital media, while Hathaway shared how revisiting her character felt like reconnecting with an old version of herself—with newfound confidence and experience.

Fashion, identity, and storytelling

The discussion also touched upon fashion—central to the film’s narrative. Streep revealed she was never deeply interested in fashion trends, but rather in how clothing reflects character and identity. Hathaway, on the other hand, credited the first film with shaping her relationship with fashion, calling it an “entryway into a world” she grew to love.

The conversation ended on a heartfelt note, with both actors expressing admiration for each other. Streep praised Hathaway’s growth as an artist, while Hathaway encouraged Streep to explore theatre.

Sharing the video, Johar wrote that the interaction left him “enriched” and reaffirmed his admiration for both stars, especially Streep, whom he called an “icon.”

With expectations riding high, The Devil Wears Prada 2 aims to revisit its iconic characters while adapting them to a rapidly evolving world—something both Streep and Hathaway believe is at the heart of the film’s story.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to hit cinemas on May 1, 2026.
