Kamal Haasan calls for production cuts in Indian cinema amid West Asia crisis
Kamal Haasan has asked the Indian film industry to rein in wasteful spending and rethink costly production habits amid rising economic pressure during the West Asia conflict. He said any cost correction must protect workers and push the industry towards more disciplined, sustainable filmmaking.
Tamil superstar and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has urged the Indian film industry to reassess its spending practices, citing the economic strain of the West Asia conflict. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for national restraint, Kamal released a detailed statement calling for an end to "inflated entourage culture" and luxury waste.
Questioning the industry's reliance on expensive overseas locations, he asked, "Why must every love story bloom only in Paris?" He argued that the deepening global crisis — affecting fuel, energy, and logistics — demands a shift toward tighter production discipline and local confidence rather than extravagant foreign travel.
He said the warning had come at a time when film budgets were already rising and market recovery remained uneven. Kamal added that the impact would not be limited to production alone, as inflationary pressures could also alter consumer spending on entertainment in the coming months. The actor said the industry must address these issues before the burden falls on daily wage workers and crew members.
Kamal Haasan backs worker safety and dignity
Addressing the film fraternity, the 71-year-old said the strain would be felt across the ecosystem, including producers, workers, theatres, distributors and financiers. Kamal wrote that every rupee spent should serve the film, not merely create an appearance of scale. At the same time, he stressed that any correction in cinema economics must not come at the cost of workers’ wages, safety, dignity, food, transport, accommodation or humane working conditions, saying the burden cannot be shifted to those who labour the hardest.
Instead, the actor said the industry should look at cutting waste, poor planning, inflated entourage culture, unnecessary foreign travel and production delays. In one of the lines from his note, Kamal asked, "Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland?". He added that romance does not require foreign exchange and said Indian cinema, and Indians, should show greater confidence in themselves and in the country.

Kamal also called for a meeting of minds across the industry and urged an industry-wide conversation involving producers, actors, directors, unions, studios, exhibitors, distributors, OTT platforms and guilds to work out how to navigate the economic challenges ahead. He proposed more practical and sustainable ways of working, including better shooting discipline, tighter schedules, lower luxury and entourage expenses, limited foreign travel where local alternatives exist, energy conservation across sets and studios, and more sustainable set construction with reuse of materials.
The Thug Life actor said that extravagance had often been mistaken for scale, while some of the industry’s greatest films were made with clarity, discipline and conviction rather than excess. Referring to the wider national call for responsible consumption, Kamal wrote that the film industry too must follow suit and that this was a time for national interest over personal interest. He ended by saying, "If we protect the economics of cinema today, we protect the future of cinema tomorrow."
Kamal’s statement came after Modi appealed to the country to reduce fuel consumption, revive work-from-home, buy less gold and avoid unnecessary foreign travel, among other measures. Last seen in the 2025 film Thug Life, Kamal will next feature in Nelson Dilipkumar’s untitled film with Rajinikanth.
The actor is also filming Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel with Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas.
