Gritty when they needed to be, proactive when the opportunity arose, the two batted with real maturity. Both were well-set to carry Pakistan forward. But Bangladesh knew that one breakthrough here could bring the house down. Just when panic was about to set in the Bangladeshi camp, it was Taijul Islam who broke the back of Pakistan's lower middle order with the second new ball. He dismissed the well-set Salman Agha and fished out Hasan Ali soon after as well. The tourists slipped from 296/5 to 304/7, and Bangladesh now find themselves in the driving seat to script history.

Taijul and Nahid turn the screws on - Pakistan still had a herculean task ahead coming into the afternoon session. Babar and Masood batted nicely in the first half hour or so and kept scoring at a good clip. However, it was Taijul Islam who broke the 92-run stand for the third wicket by fishing out Babar, who looked in pristine touch. From that moment, Bangladesh wrestled back control, sending Pakistan tumbling from 133/2 to 162/5, with the well-set Masood also falling for a fine fifty. Salman Agha and Rizwan then took it upon themselves to bat out the session, weathering testing spells from Nahid Rana and Taijul to see Pakistan through to 200/5 at the break.

Babar and Masood steady Pakistan - Mehidy was in action in the morning, snaffling a stunning gully catch to end Abdullah Fazal's patient vigil before trapping Azan Awais in front with a crafty in-drifter. Pakistan were under pressure, being pushed to rebuild. But Masood and Babar came together and steadied things up pretty well. With no demons as such on the pitch, the two looked proactive, feasting on anything loose, as they peppered the fence with a string of crisp boundaries to see the session through. Nahid Rana bowled a superb spell with control and was supported by the two spinners, who bowled consistently on tight lines.

STUMPS ON DAY 4 - Well, there it is. The umpires take the reading and have come to a conclusion that the artificial light has taken over the natural light. So the conditions are not favourable enough to continue. The players walk off the field due to bad light. Nonetheless, it has been a gripping day of Test cricket overall. Bangladesh have the upper hand, but Pakistan have displayed a tough fight to stay afloat. Although they are hanging on a cliff right now, with just three wickets in hand.

Is Salman run out at the non-striker's end? The Bangladeshi players are excited and the decision is sent upstairs by the on-field umpires. And whoa! The replay shows that Salman has just managed to drag his bat in before Mushfiqur Rahim scores the direct hit. Saved by the barest of margins there. Almost a moment of brilliance for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh bowlers tighten the grip - After the Drinks break, Taijul provided Bangladesh with the breakthrough as Shan Masood fell to a sharp short-leg catch from Mahmudul Hasan Joy. The left-arm spinner looked full of confidence from thereon, constantly troubling the batters alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto rotated his bowlers smartly and was rewarded when Nahid Rana dismissed Saud Shakeel. Bangladesh threatened to grab a couple more wickets before Tea, but Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha managed to hold on, albeit unconvincingly at times, with a few loose strokes. The hosts sense an opportunity heading into the final session, which has the potential to be the last session of both the match and the series. Momentum with Bangladesh - SESSION SUMMARY - 99 runs and 3 wickets in 27 overs! Pakistan began the session solidly, negotiating the first half hour or so without losing a wicket as Babar Azam and Shan Masood steadily chipped away at the target. Masood brought up his half-century, and the pair added a crucial 92-run stand. However, the momentum shifted dramatically after Babar got strangled down the leg side against the run of play.

... DAY 4, SESSION 2 ...

Masood and Babar fight it out - Pakistan were back to square one to reconstruct. But Masood, who has been guilty of not converting his sweet 20s and 30s into something substantial, dug in with purpose. Babar brought his customary calm to the other end, and together the two began to wrest back control, finding the fence several times in the second half of the session to give Pakistan something to smile about. Bangladesh were as precise as ever with the ball, but will want to tighten things up in the field as they were pretty sloppy. For Pakistan, the presence of Masood and Babar together for as long as possible is the key to avoiding a collapse. Although there are not many demons, but the spinners have found decent purchase from the surface, and it will only get harder to bat on as it wears on. The post-Lunch session begins at 6.40 am GMT. Early inroads with the ball - It was a big test of character for both Pakistani openers against a consistent pace attack. The pitch offered no real demons, but Shoriful Islam and particularly Nahid Rana probed hard by hitting the right areas and testing their resolve. Azan Awais looked the more assured of the two, but Abdullah Fazal could not hold on for long. Azan too failed to convert his start into something meaningful, and both openers were back on either side of the Drinks break, with Pakistan reduced to 41/2. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was involved in both the wickets, first taking a spectacular catch at gully and then prising out Awais off a beauty.

A mixed bag morning session - 24 overs, 101 runs, 2 wickets. Something for everyone in the first session of Day 4. Bangladesh would be delighted to dismiss both the Pakistani openers early in the day, whereas Pakistan won't be too displeased with the way they closed out the session with two of their batting stalwarts seeing it through. The toil ahead is long, though, and both Masood and Babar know that patience and resilience will be the only currency that matters from here.

A huge appeal for LBW and up goes the finger. Azan Awais has a chat with Shan Masood and opts to take the review. There is no spike on the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows that the ball is clipping the leg stump on umpire's call. So, the on-field decision is upheld. Awais departs after a decent start, but couldn't convert. Pakistan do not lose the review, but have lost both their openers now. They are reduced to 41/2, needing 396 runs.

DRINKS BREAK! The first hour has flown by on the fourth day and despite a decent resilience shown by the Pakistani openers, Bangladesh have managed to split that pair. The surface still looks good to bat on, but variable bounce is creeping in and it will only wear further as the match progresses. Azan has looked assured so far and will need to forge a strong partnership with his captain, Masood, from here and bat through the session. Bowling from Bangladesh has been largely precise as well and they will look to get one more out before the Lunch break to tighten their grip on the contest further. Nahid Rana, who has bowled pretty impressively, picking up a wicket, will continue after the hydration break.

PITCH REPORT - Athar Ali Khan is inspecting the conditions in Sylhet. He says the surface has been good throughout and should hold up well into this final session. The big question, he notes, is whether Pakistan can create history. Says a chase of this magnitude has never been achieved at this ground, and this is the highest target Pakistan have ever been set here. On Bangladesh's bowling strategy, he points to the final two overs before the break as a masterclass in length control. Of the 12 deliveries bowled, he details, nine or ten hit the perfect good-length mark, completely shutting down the scoring options. That, he says, is brilliant Test match bowling, and exactly the discipline Bangladesh will be looking to replicate from here. Adds that for Pakistan, all eyes are on Babar Azam. He points that it has been 31 innings without a Test century for him, which means the pressure is firmly on him, yet his class is beyond question. Further adds that as he gets his eye in, he has every ability to master this surface and post a big one, much as Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das did earlier in the match. Adds that a chase of this magnitude demands someone to stand up and anchor the innings, someone cut from the cloth of a Younis Khan or a Mohammad Yousuf. Ends by saying whether Pakistan have that steel in them today remains to be seen.

Pakistan's star batter - Babar Azam, on the mood in the dressing room, says the feeling is good, and the focus is simply on doing their best. He acknowledges that the target is big, but two full days remain to chase it down. On the approach, he says big partnerships are the key. Adds that the openers need to lay the foundation and the batters coming in after must build on it. On his form, he says he has always been confident, and runs in the middle only add to that. He is happy with how he is batting. On the pitch, he feels it is still pretty good. Details that there is a little spin, but on the whole, it is a nice surface to bat on.

A word from the coach - Phil Simmons, the Head Coach of Bangladesh, on being asked whether on the previous day, Day 3, they were in any mood to declare innings, smiles and replies that he or his skipper had no intention to declare the innings. Adds that they had it planned that they are going to bat as much as they can. On the pitch, he calls it a really good surface, pointing to the Zimbabwe match at the same venue, where it stayed even throughout. He stresses that bowlers still have to work hard and hit the right areas because it is fundamentally a good batting wicket, and yesterday proved that batters who apply themselves can score freely here. On the dressing room mood, he says confidence is naturally high right now. Mentions that wins breed confidence, and when players are scoring hundreds, it rises even further. Says these are exactly the things the team has been working towards, and they are now starting to arrive consistently.

About the pitch - Ahead of Day 3, Mahmudul Hasan Joy had mentioned in a pre-match interview that the ball was coming nicely onto the bat during his stint, making him feel comfortable at the crease. Now, looking at Bangladesh's batting performance on Day 3 can only reinforce the assessment that there are no demons on this pitch. However, with the new ball in hand and two inexperienced young openers at the crease, the hosts possess more than enough firepower to make early inroads. Stay tuned as the fourth day begins shortly.

Patience the key for Pakistan - A fifth day is not out of the question! Why? Because once a batter gets settled on this surface, it will become increasingly difficult to dislodge them, at least the Bangladeshi batters have displayed that resilience. Pakistan will need tremendous heart, patience, and composure to mount any kind of realistic challenge. And the likes of Babar and Rizwan will have to bat their hearts out. Bangladesh, however, will arrive this morning with the scent of history in the air. With their bowlers well rested, their confidence sky high, and an entire nation watching, the Tigers will be eager to wrap things up swiftly and assert their dominance on home turf without question.

Pakistan face a mountain - Khurram Shahzad was Pakistan's standout performer with four wickets, and the visitors managed to negotiate two overs under fading light before the umpires called stumps. Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal, the opening pair, walked off unbeaten but also without opening their account, already staring down the enormity of what lies ahead. Pakistan have a herculean task ahead, and they will have to contend with hostile spells from the pace trio of Bangladesh, as well as the relentless spin of Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on a Sylhet surface that is deteriorating by the hour.

Day 3 was an absolute masterclass for Bangladesh, who were utterly dominant with the bat. The Moving Day belonged emphatically to the Tigers, headlined by Mushfiqur Rahim's magnificent 137 off 233 balls, they stretched their second-innings total to 390 and set Pakistan a mountainous target of 437 runs to win. Half-centuries from Litton Das and Mahmudul Hasan Joy further underlined Bangladesh's commanding display, as session after session slipped away from the Pakistan bowling attack that fought hard but simply could not turn the tide.

All to play for on Day 4 - Day 3, which is generally known as the moving day in Test cricket, has flown by and at the end of it, Bangladesh are well ahead in the game. Even the two overs they bowled late in the day almost turned out to be fruitful as Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam had the Pakistan openers chasing for the ball. Pakistan will be pleased to get out of Day 3 unscathed and will look to put on a sturdy batting display, and truth be told, the pitch doesn't seem to have any demons on it, and if the visitors can make the most of the first two sessions on Day 4, we could be in for a exciting run chase. A tale of two teams - Bangladesh have had the upper hand with the ball, given their well-rounded bowling attack, but they have put on a fine display with the bat as well in their second innings. Scoring 390 runs in the third innings of the Test match, when neither of the first two innings saw a score of above 300 runs, is pretty solid. Pakistan, on the other hand, made changes to their bowling attack for this game and it hasn't quite worked out as intended. Their batting is already pretty inexperienced, and they will be hoping that at least one of their young opening batters goes on to score big in the fourth innings.

The hosts in a promising position - Bangladesh are in prime position to sweep the two-match Test series, and Pakistan have it all to do on Day 4 and maybe even on Day 5. Still, 437 runs needed for the win, and the visitors have all 10 wickets in hand. All in all, Day 3 also belonged to Bangladesh and they will be hoping to make quick inroads with the ball on Day 4.

There's a discussion going on between the two umpires. The artificial lights have been on for a bit, and now it seems like the umpires are calling the players off. Bad Light stops play and a reading is taken. Najmul Hossain Shanto was about to introduce Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the off-spinner, due to the fading light, but it has now been confirmed that it is STUMPS on DAY 3.
