How has Jason Holder filled the Hardik Pandya void for GT? Vikram Solanki explains
Jason Holder's all-round display against Royal Challengers Bengaluru powered Gujarat Titans' win and earned warm praise from Vikram Solanki. As Gujarat push for the playoffs, Holder provides balance, experience and communication to fill the gap left by Hardik Pandya's exit in 2024.

Over the last few seasons, Gujarat Titans have felt the void left by Hardik Pandya's departure from the side. Ahead of the 2024 season, Hardik was traded to Mumbai Indians, leaving GT with a big gap to fill across all three departments.
When Holder was bought for Rs. 7 crore during the IPL 2026 auction, it was unclear at first what role he would play in the season. But since making his debut for the team in the reverse fixture against RCB earlier in the season, the West Indian all-rounder has made himself one of the first names on the team sheet.
Holder's influence with bat, ball and on the field was evident during Gujarat's win over RCB in Ahmedabad on April 30. With the ball, Holder picked up two wickets for 29 runs in his four overs and held on to three catches. While the dismissal of Rajat Patidar was a contentious one, the catches of Tim David and Krunal Pandya helped GT push RCB to the brink.
With the bat, he remained calm under pressure despite a middle-order collapse for GT, that saw them go from 92/2 to 111/5. He stitched together a 30-run stand with Rahul Tewatia to get GT close to the finish line.
Solanki explained what makes Holder a special addition to the squad, bringing in his skills and experience on to the field.
"He's a world-class all-rounder, isn't he? He's sort of proven across the years in international cricket and franchise cricket in the past, how sort of measured he is. And I think he's only getting better," said Vikram Solanki, GT's director of cricket.
"We were very excited when he was part of the squad. He's had to wait his time before he's got an opportunity. But since he's got an opportunity in all of the games he's played, he's made good contributions. And today, in the field, he was brilliant. He's been brilliant with the ball. He has fantastic ability with the bat, in terms of his ability to strike a cricket ball. But he's also quite smart in playing exactly the way he needs to, given any sort of situation. And that partnership with Rahul Tewatia is exactly an example of that," added Solanki.
'HOLDER HAS ALL THE ABILITY YOU NEED'
With the arrival of the impact player rule, the role of a true all-rounder has diminished in the IPL. But Holder proved yet again what he brings to the table. Balance with bat and ball.
"I think when we were pursuing Jason at the auction, it was with a mind to him being able to fulfil both roles, the bat and the ball. So he does offer us exactly that," explained Solanki. "His numbers, I think, if you take a look over the last calendar year, and perhaps a little bit longer than that, his numbers at five and six have been quite outstanding."
Solanki said that Holder has all the ability you need from an all-rounder in the side. Apart from being a team man, the GT director also said that Holder is always up for conversations with the team management and the younger players in the squad.
"He has all of the ability that you'd need. He's physically a strong guy, has great reach, leverage as far as the ball is concerned, so all of the technicalities are covered off. He also is now bringing an added dimension, that sort of sprinkling, sawdust, if you like, of being a really experienced campaigner. And I think that's what's playing out. That's what we're seeing in front of us now," said Solanki.
"He's a great team man. He also brings... You often get individuals that have a good amount of experience that perhaps can't communicate it as well. It doesn't sort of come naturally to them. Jason will always be willing to have conversations. He'll always be willing to have conversations, whether it's with the coaching group, to actually impart a little bit of influence in his experience, as far as the coaching group is concerned. But he'll also do it with all of the young guys around as well," said Solanki.
Holder has scored 86 runs and picked up three wickets in his three games for GT so far as they make a push for playoffs this season.
